Rescue: HI-Surf Season 1 Episode 2, “Mauka to Makai,” shows off Oahu’s North Shore and how it’s full of charming towns, amazing beaches, and hot spot locations for tourists.

Taking advantage of their time on the island, a family of four decides to connect with nature by hiking one of the beginner trails they found on Google.

Although the parents are thrilled about this family bonding adventure, their daughter Amber, and son Luke, couldn’t care less. While hiking, the family finds a pond, and Amber decides to take pictures for her social media in it.

Just as the family is getting ready to move on to their next stop on the hike, Amber gets stuck in a flash flood that pulls her away from her family.

Back on North Shore Beach, Captain Jennings and Emily are served with court papers stating that they’re getting sued by the family of the kid they saved on Rescue: HI-Surf Season 1 Episode 1.

It’s the one where Kainalu proves that his spot should have been given to Hina when he gave the ambulance the wrong location, forcing the team to carry the victim over 100 meters to the vehicle.

On top of everything he’s already dealing with, Jennings also receives a call from his daughter’s school informing him that she’s been skipping school for weeks.

Even with their unknown legal future, the North Shore team still has a job to do. As they’re getting ready to head to the tower, Jennings gets a call that a hiker has become a missing person after getting swept away in a flash flood.

Despite his training to follow protocol and wait for the fire department to finish their on-land search before the North Shore team can head into the water to look for Amber, Jennings isn’t willing to have another incident like Zion where his team finds the victim too late.

Jennings, Emily, and Will take two jetskis out and start their search since Jennings is convinced Amber has washed away further than the firefighters think and is now lost at sea. His hunch is proven correct when a shot of Amber lying on debris unconscious in the ocean is shown.

While Jennings, Emily, and Will begin their search, Laka is assigned to watch the beach at the tower with the two newbies. Taking advantage of his new babysitting role, Laka makes Kainalu clean out the disgusting storage unit on the beach while Hina works lookout on the beach with him.

As the pair reach the tower, they find two kids left on the steps with instructions from their father to listen to the lifeguards while he’s at work. Seeing herself and her childhood in these kids, Hina has no problem watching them while she does her job, but this adds to Laka’s annoyance at being left to babysit.

Not wanting to watch kids anymore, hoping to feel important, Laka decides to leave Hina alone with Kainalu and takes an ATV to patrol the beach.

For obvious reasons, Hina is still mad at Kainalu for his attitude and for taking her spot on the team, but in rich kid fashion, he’s just upset he’s become both a janitor and a babysitter in one day.

Back with the search team, Jennings is starting to worry that they won’t find Amber in time. They haven’t found any signs of debris in the water, the only thing they have found is a boat with fishermen in it.

Running out of options, the Captain asks the men on the boat if they’ve seen Amber floating around. Although they haven’t, the pair on the boat say they’re more than happy to help look, but Jennings declines.

But, of course, once the search team leaves, this drunk boat driver decides to help anyway and makes matters worse by accidentally running over a scuba diver because he wasn’t watching where he was going, just looking for his next beer.

Still searching for Amber, the team gets a call about the now unconscious scuba diver. Not wanting to abandon the search for Amber, Emily decides to take her chances off the jet ski, swimming with a floaty and GPS to follow the current in hopes of finding the missing person.

During her search, Emily accidentally drops her GPS and becomes lost at sea with no way of telling her team where she is. But as luck would have it, she ends up right where Amber is floating.

After dropping the scuba diver back on shore with the paramedics, the team returns to the spot where they left Emily but quickly realizes she’s no longer there.

They’re now forced to do a search and rescue for two missing people. Jennings remembers Emily saying she was going to follow the current.

Ordering the team to spread out and follow the current, they quickly find both Emily and Amber floating on a tree.

Back on the beach, Kainalu finally apologizes to Hina for taking her spot on the team and admits that he was the one who called in the wrong location for the rescue, not Jennings.

He then has the nerve to ask her on a date. After everything he’s put her through and having to deal with his horrible attitude, she obviously says no.

Breaking the awkward silence, the pair spring into action when a surfer gets stuck in the current. While Hina runs into the water to rescue the victim, she tells Kainalu to get all the supplies.

Once the pair have the victim back on land, Kainalu realizes he’s messed up yet another rescue when he forgets the radio they use to call an ambulance. After running back to the tower and then running back to Hina, he finally calls for help.

Although it’s been a hectic day, both teams are finally able to calm down and celebrate having successful days. And hopefully, take the time to prepare for what drama is to come next.
