Nobody Wants This Season 1 Episodes 9-10 Review: My Girl Bina / Bat Mitzvah Crashers

Reviews

Nobody Wants This saves the best for last with two of the season’s best episodes. Joanne and Noah’s major conflict finally comes to a head on Nobody Wants This Season 1 Episode 9, “My Girl Bina,” and Nobody Wants This Season 1 Episode 10, “Bat Mitzvah Crashers.”

“My Girl Bina” may be the best episode of the season as it sets up a battle between Bina and Joanne. An overbearing mother versus a new girlfriend is a classic battle pairing but so much funnier because of the performances of these two women.

It’s such a thrilling and entertaining battle of wits. Noah being left in the dark about most of it makes it cleverer.

Kristen Bell and Tovah Feldshuh make this episode the triumph it is because they kill their performances. Bell has always been a good comedic actress but it’s episodes like “My Girl Bina” that highlight that ability. She’s naturally funny, even without having to go over the top.

Feldshuh is a legend and has played roles like this before, but it’s a winning role for her. She’s so monstrous in a very specific way. You hate her but also love the venom in her heart. Bina is the perfect complex, layered (not really a) villain for Nobody Wants This.

“My Girl Bina” is almost a chess match between Joanne and Bina. They switch between who is winning, until the very end when it seems they draw. The battle seems over and they can finally co-exist, but then Bina throws the last move to annihilate Joanne.

Brilliant storytelling happens in this episode, and Bell and Feldshuh give is the charisma, comedy, and power it needs to be the funniest and most memorable episode of Nobody Wants This.

Bat Mitzvah Crashers isn’t as strong of an episode as “My Girl Bina.” It goes more towards the cliche route but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The fake-up adds the necessary drama to make their reunion sweeter.

It also leaves Nobody Wants This on a cliffhanger (of sorts) to make us want another season. It’s an entertaining episode that once again proves that Adam Brody and Bell’s chemistry is top-notch.

The idea of them not being together is too much to bare. It’s a fine episode that shows some growth for the main characters and sets up a lot of potential entertaining storylines for a potential future season.

Nobody Wants This concludes with Joanne and Noah taking several big leaps, then falling back, then more leaps. The final offers a satisfying conclusion that doesn’t quite feel like the end. It’s sweet, funny, and cute. We would gladly return for more seasons of Joanne and Noah’s story.

Netflix doesn’t have many romantic comedy TV series for adults and this just made me want more of them.
