The Acolyte Canceled by Lucasfilm and Disney+ After One Season

News

Lucasfilm has decided not to renew The Acolyte for a second season on Disney+.

Deadline confirmed the news, with the decision occurring a month after the release of The Acolyte Season 1 Episode 8.

The Acolyte was the first on-screen property in the Star Wars franchise that didn’t take place during the Skywalkers Saga. Instead, the show takes place a hundred years before the events of Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace.

The show swaps iconic characters from the films for a story, instead, focusing on an original plot with mostly brand-new characters. Deadline reports that the early episodes launched with high viewership numbers.

The two-episode premiere reached 4.8 million views on the first day. However, the series couldn’t maintain its momentum, and the finale didn’t reach Nielsen’s Top 10 for the week it launched.

Variety, confirming the show’s cancellation, brought up The Acolyte‘s storylines, suggesting the series’ themes and narrative didn’t hit with a portion of the fan community.

The series finale left many things open, with showrunner Leslye Headland discussing her ideas for a second season with IndieWire.

The series also starred Lee Jung-jae as Sol, Charlie Barnett as Yord Fandar, Dafne Keen as Jecki Lon, Rebecca Henerson as Vernestra Rwoh, Jodie Turner-Smith as Mother Aniseya, and Carrie-Anne Moss as Indara.

Leslye Headland, Kathleen Kennedy, Simon Emanuel, Jason Micallef, and Jeff F. King served as executive producers for the series.

The Acolyte is streaming on Disney+.
