Fire Country Season 2 Episode 8 Review: It’s Not Over

Fire Country, Reviews

Fire Country Season 2 Episode 8, “It’s Not Over,” perfectly sets the scene for the two remaining episodes.

In their efforts to keep Three Rock alive, Eve signs the crew up to volunteer at the Governor’s ball in an attempt to sway her decision. In their efforts, they find that the information surrounding Three Rock’s closure has all been a lie.

Meanwhile, Gabriella is put through the wringer, forced to endure a surprise visit from her mother and a stubborn Vince who refuses to tell anyone about his health issues.

“It’s Not Over” has an array of significant moments throughout as the series works to set the tone for the remainder of the season perfectly.

Blindsided by the Truth

With the belief that their issues stemmed from outside opposition and area residents’ rebuttal to their presence in town, the revelation that Luke is behind the proposal to shut Three Rock down is an utter shock to all involved.

Luke has never been trustworthy, but at the beginning of the season, it seemed as if he was turning a page in how he approached situations. However, that is obviously just a ploy to get what he wants.

Manny sticking true to his character and exposing Luke to everyone in attendance at the ball is one of the most pleasing moments of the episode. Even with the Governor as a witness, Luke deserves to be unable to keep his traitorous ways a secret.

After spending his time posted beside Eve and feeding her all the false information he needs, it’ll be interesting to see how that relationship dynamic changes.

It would be beneficial to the storyline, especially Eve’s, if we could see a confrontation between them. However, with the last two episodes focusing on the Lazarus fire, I’m not hopeful we’ll get that this season.

Nothing’s Over Till It’s Over

Even with Three Rock potentially going under, a 45-thousand-acre fire uncontained, and Vince’s brief dance with potential death, the most thrilling moments of the episode derive from Roberta’s interactions with Bode.

Despite the previous instances alluding to a potential re-connection with Bode and Gabriela being subtle, “It’s Not Over” takes those underlying hints and boosts them exponentially.

Bode to Roberta: All I want for Gabriela is happiness, even if that means keeping my distance and my mouth shut. Maybe you should consider doing the same.

Without saying it in exact words, Bode confirms his love for Gabriela is still intact by continuing to do whatever it takes to make her happy.

Bode isn’t alone, though. Throughout the hour, both he and Gabriela move with the intention of not hurting one another, and her interactions with Vince indicate that.

Instead of working on Vince like a regular patient and doing everything she can to ensure his survival, no matter how risky, she hesitates. In a dire moment pertaining to his direct health, Gabriela contemplates whether to shock him or not, keeping in mind that if anything were to happen, she wouldn’t be able to live with herself because of Bode.

While Gabriela and Roberta’s relationship will likely never be completely intact, her interactions with her mother are the best pre-wedding gift she’s received. If a woman you consider a stranger can come in, spend less than five hours with you, and pinpoint who truly cares for you, I’d take it as a sign.

Plus, a big flashing sign that Diego isn’t right for Gabriela is him inviting her mom secretly. If he truly understood their relationship’s hurt and strain, he wouldn’t blindside her like that, especially on an important night with Three Rocks’ existence hanging in the balance.

It’s been a tough year for television, with the strikes putting productions on pause for five months, season orders getting fewer episodes, and having to film hastily to keep up.

That said, Fire Country has proven that even with the odds against you, you can create an excellent product that continues to showcase the amount of love and dedication everyone attached to the show has.

I eagerly await these remaining episodes and the inevitable cliffhanger that will have me and the rest of the audience left with our jaws dropped.

Stray Thoughts:

  • It’s nice that even in moments of chaos, the series can still take the time to provide us with a wholesome moment of joy. Bode is in the trenches at the moment, and Genevieve asking to continue visiting him until visitation is gone is a lifeline that he can hold on to.
  • No matter how much I want to believe Fire Country wouldn’t kill off one of its main characters, it’s looking grimmer and rougher for Vince. The potential of the season ending with either his life hanging in the balance or him dead is severely possible.
