Chicago P.D. Season 11 Episode 13 Review: More

Chicago P.D., Reviews

Chicago P.D. Season 11 Episode 13, “More,” brings the season finale and Upton’s departure after an entire season focused on her character development (or lack thereof). We’ve watched Upton run away from her problems for an entire season, but this episode isn’t the same.

Instead of running away, she faces Matson head-on and puts herself in danger in order to get to Voight and save his life. Even though it might seem stupid, it is the kind of thing we would expect of Upton.

In the end, she chooses to stop running from everything and face her fears. That is what leads her to leave the Intelligence Unit and go after something more.

With Voight missing, the entire team starts to spiral, and it makes sense that Trudy first takes the lead and tells them what to do. She knows how to keep her head straight and do what must be done to find Voight.

However, that doesn’t last long, as Upton immediately takes charge. She knows Matson and what to expect of him, so she believes they can stay ahead.

But even with Upton in charge, this is the first time in a long time that we see the entire team in action. They all have the same goal (finding Voight) and bring the best of their skills to reach it.

“More” is yet another reminder of how perfect Chicago P.D. is when the Intelligence Unit works as one instead of separate individuals with different goals. The unit works because they are a team.

Even though he is part of the team, Voight has clearly stood out to Matson because he is a lone wolf, an island. That is what has made him so fascinating to watch.

In watching him, Matson noticed the same thing Jo noticed during her time with the team: Voight and Upton work well together. The serial killer goes as far as to say Upton sees Voight as a father figure.

It is true that Upton got closer to Voight the minute Halstead left. It is also true that she took Erin’s role and became Voight’s protégé.

But could we go as far as to say they have a father/daughter relationship?

Chicago P.D. Season 11 makes us believe they have the perfect mentor/mentee relationship. Upton is too much like Voight in her behavior as a cop and seems to choose to work with him for that reason.

It has always felt like she was trying to learn from him, to emulate his career, but it never felt like she was trying to replace her father with him. On the contrary, given her relationship with her dad, one would think she would try to avoid any relationship like that.

Even though Erin was Voight’s daughter, Upton never occupied that place. Up until this episode, it never felt like the bond was familial.

However, Chicago P.D. Season 11 has prepared us for Voight’s potential “call someone you love” being Upton. The two have spent much time together, so it would make sense for him to call her.

Chicago P.D. Season 11 Episode 13 - LaRoyce Hawkins as Kevin Atwater attempts to search a car by breaking the driver's side window as Bojana Novakovic as Josephine Petrovic stands nearby.

Voight knows what would happen to Upton (or anyone else) if he called, so he chooses to accelerate his death instead. This drives Matson out of his comfort zone, erasing his plan and pushing him to step out of line and take Upton himself.

And still, Matson manages to get inside Voight’s head. He makes him see the relationship with Upton as a father/daughter relationship.

“No dad would want this” is the first clue. He doesn’t want Upton there. He doesn’t want her to risk her life for him. No father would.

But the second clue comes when he asks Upton if he is bad for her. He isn’t just thinking as a boss and how he shapes her career, but as a person.

Could his behavior affect the way she makes decisions? Could he be the reason she’s been having such a hard time?

The truth is Upton has become better because of her connection to Voight. She has seen the parts of him she wants for herself and the behavior she wants to avoid. He has been a better mentor than he believes.

There are a few things Chicago P.D. Season 11 Episode 13, “More,” makes us think about. One of them is how much we miss Alvin Olinsky.

Voight seeing him as he believes he is dying is quite perfect. We know he misses his friend, and if Alvin had still been alive, Matson would have gotten to him as the person Voight loves.

The other element that gets us thinking is Chapman’s appearance. Even though she butted heads with Voight at one point, she is clearly concerned for his safety.

Her showing up as the paramedics are taking him out of the house makes us wonder if there’s more to come between these two characters. In all honesty, it is time we got Voight a girlfriend.

Jo’s presence doesn’t go unnoticed. She is the voice of reason when Hailey starts to lose it. She is the one who points out that Matson wouldn’t make it that easy.

Her addition to the show has been incredible. Watching her join the team after Upton’s departure would be interesting, as she would bring a different vibe. She isn’t like any character who’s worked in the Intelligence Unit before.

Last but not least, Chicago P.D. Season 11 Episode 13, “More,” is a culmination of Voight’s violence.

It has been a while since we last saw him be violent towards a suspect. He hasn’t used the cage or buried bodies.

But now we see him attack Matson in the most violent way we have ever seen him behave. Voight goes straight for the eyes, representing the staples he used with his previous victims. Then, he doesn’t stop until Matson is dead.

This is one of the most gruesome scenes the show has aired, but it makes sense. Matson has been torturing him for many episodes. He killed Noah. So Voight retaliates the only way he knows how.

Chicago P.D. Season 11 might not have been the best the show has had, but it has had its memorable moments.

If there is one thing to criticize, it is the lack of episodes in which the team worked as one. When they all bring their expertise and skills to solve a case, they deliver the best storylines.

Hopefully, Chicago P.D. Season 12 will bring us more of that. Until then, we can only say goodbye to Hailey Upton and thank her for eight great seasons.
