Alaqua Cox’s scene-stealing Maya is making the jump from a guest star role on Hawkeye to a leading role in her series, Echo.
The five-episode crusade will see Maya flee to her childhood home in Oklahoma as she orchestrates her plan to take over Wilson Fisk’s empire in his absence. She soon realizes bringing her fight to the Choctaw Nation has jeopardized her family and dredged up their long-buried secrets.
As visions of her ancestors plaque her, Maya fights her way to the throne in a medium that promises to be a gritty, street-level drama that rivals Netflix’s Daredevil.
However, Marvel Studios has struggled to scrape the surface of Netflix’s series at every turn.
Hopefully, the promise to do better with spotlight branding, diverse storytellers, and authentic representation is a turning point for this mini-series medium.
No doubt Maya has earned her shot at dethroning the king, but can Marvel Studios get out of her way? For the sake of giving this compelling character her due, we sure hope so.
Echo will enter into the bowels of Kingpin’s organization, exploring the scum of the criminal underworld as antagonists from all over come to collect the bounty on Maya’s head.
And with Kingpin back in the game, Matt Murdock’s Devil of Hells Kitchen won’t be far behind.
