‘Good Trouble’ and ‘Cruel Summer’ Canceled at Freeform
Good Trouble and Cruel Summer have been canceled at Freeform.
The Fosters spinoff series, which premiered in 2019, will end its run after its fifth season that is set to return on Tuesday, January 2, at 10/9c.
The anthology drama ends after a two-season run, concluding with Cruel Summer Season 2 Episode 10, “Endgame,” in July 2023. It made a two-episode series debut with Cruel Summer Season 1 Episode 1, “Happy Birthday, Jeanette Turner,” and Cruel Summer Season 1 Episode 2, “A Smashing Good Time,” in April 2021.

The cancellation of both shows marks the end of Freeform’s current scripted slate, per TV Line.
Freeform’s cancellation of the animated comedy Praise Petey in November and Grown-ish airing its final episodes in 2024 contributes to its unclear future for scripted programming.
“Sources say Freeform executives, led by executive vp programming and content strategy Simran Sethi, wanted to bring back both shows but the ratings for both Good Trouble and Cruel Summer didn’t justify the costs of doing so — especially as Disney looks to cut costs by another $2 billion — and as most viewers watch the network’s programming on Hulu,” per The Hollywood Reporter‘s exclusive.
TV Line reports Good Trouble “will be given the opportunity to film some additional scenes for a supersized series finale episode to properly wrap up the show.”

The show that follows a group of friends and roommates at the Coterie began with The Fosters‘ Maia Mitchell as Callie Adams Foster and Cierra Ramirez’s Mariana Adams Fosters moving into the shared living space.
Good Trouble also stars Zuri Adele, Sherry Cola, Bryan Craig, Emma Hunton, Tommy Martinez, Josh Pence, and Booboo Stewart.
Cruel Summer is a YA thriller series with its first season following three timelines in 1993, 1994, and 1995 when Olivia Holt’s Kate Wallis went missing, and Chiara Aurelia’s Jeanette Turner became a complicit suspect.
The second season starred Sadie Stanley and Lexi Underwood as best friends Megan and Isabella, who become suspects in the death of Griffin Gluck’s Luke during three timelines in Y2K — July 1999, December 1999, and July 2000.
