The returning shows fill Freeform’s summer slate with the new adult animated comedy Praise Petey.

After the season premiere, new episodes of Cruel Summer Season 2 will move to its regular 10/9c timeslot. Per the season’s logline, Cruel Summer‘s next chapter takes place “in an idyllic waterfront town in the Pacific Northwest” and “follows the rise and fall of an intense teenage friendship.”

“Approaching the story from three different timelines surrounding Y2K, the season twists and turns as it tracks the early friendship between Megan, Isabella, and Megan’s best friend Luke, the love triangle that blossomed, and the mystery that would impact all of their lives going forward.”

Cruel Summer Season 2 stars Sadie Stanley, Lexi Underwood, Griffin Gluck, KaDee Strickland, Lisa Yamada, and Sean Blakemore. Paul Adelstein and Braeden De La Garza will recur.

Cruel Summer debuted on Freeform in 2021. The psychological thriller’s first season starred Olivia Holt, Chiara Aurelia, Michael Landes, Froy Gutierrez, Harley Quinn Smith, Allius Barnes, Blake Lee, and Brooklyn Sudano.

It was the first series to debut under Freeform President Tara Duncan, who shared a statement upon its Season 2 renewal that Freeform announced the same day as Cruel Summer Season 1 Episode 10, “Hostile Witness,” aired.

“Renewing Cruel Summer for a season two was an easy decision,” Duncan stated.

“It’s the biggest series debut in Freeform’s history, and the audience response has been overwhelmingly positive. Jessica, Michelle, and Tia did a phenomenal job telling an addictive story that’s tapped into the cultural zeitgeist. I’m excited to see where they take the series next,” Duncan added.

Cruel Summer comes from studio eOne and was created by Bert V. Royal. Elle Triedman serves as showrunner, taking over for Tia Napolitano.

The show’s executive producers include Triedman, Bill Purple, Tia Napolitano, and Iron Ocean Productions’ Jessica Biel and Michelle Purple. The series is produced and distributed internationally by eOne.

As previously reported, Grown-ish‘s final season will air in two parts — the first debuting in June. Justine Skye and Tara Raani have been upped to series regulars for the college-set comedy’s sixth season.

Per Freeform, Skye is Annika, “a funny, sharp, extremely ambitious future media mogul who chose Cal U because it was best for her brand.” Raaini stars as Zaara, “a first-generation Indian American. She is a junior, type-A overachiever with a lot of swagger,” who “is queer and open with her sexuality.”

ABC Signature produces Grown-ish and stars Marcus Scribner, Trevor Jackson, Diggy Simmons, and Daniella Perkins. Kenya Barris, Craig Doyle, Yara Shahidi, Anthony Anderson, Laurence Fishburne, Helen Sugland, E. Brian Dobbins, and Michael Petok are executive producers. Doyle is also the showrunner of the show’s final season.

Praise Petey will be Freeform’s animated debut when it premieres on Friday, July 21 at 10/9c. It will air two back-to-back weekly episodes as part of the network’s “Family Guy” Friday.

Per the synopsis, Praise Petey “follows Petey, a New York City “it” girl who has it all until her life comes crashing down around her. As luck would have it, a mysterious gift from her father gives her a new lease on life: She’s going to “lean into” modernizing his small-town cult.”

The animated series stars Annie Murphy, John Cho, Kiersey Clemons, Stephen Root, Amy Hill, and Christine Baranski. Praise Petey comes from creator, writer, and executive producer Anna Drezen, who is also Saturday Night Live‘s former head writer.

Bandera Entertainment’s Mike Judge, Greg Daniels, and Dustin Davis, along with ShadowMachine’s Alex Bulkley and Corey Campodonico, and Monica Padrick, are executive producers. Disney Television Studios’ 20th Television Animation produces Praise Petey, with animation by ShadowMachine.

Cruel Summer Season 2 premieres on Monday, June 5, at 9/8c. Grown-ish Season 6 premieres on Wednesday, June 28, at 10/9c.
