‘Shadow and Bone’ and ‘Glamorous’ Among 5 Series Canceled by Netflix
After only two seasons, Netflix canceled the fantasy series Shadow and Bone.
Additionally, TV Line reports that the streaming service canceled the Kim Cattrall and Miss Benny-led drama Glamorous and the animated series Agent Elvis, Capital Fall, and Farzar all after one season.
Shadow and Bone, based on Leigh Bardugo’s best-selling Young Adult novels, debuted on Netflix in April 2021. Its second and now final season premiered on the streaming service in March 2023. The show followed Alina Starkov as she discovered her powers as the Sun Summoner and set out to defeat the darkness.
The show had also adapted aspects of Bardugo’s companion duologies, Six of Crows and King of Scars, with talks of Netflix granting the on-screen Grishaverse (Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone universe) a spinoff focused on the band of thieves from the former.
Bardugo penned a statement on Instagram about Shadow and Bone‘s cancellation and Netflix’s decision not to move forward with a Six of Crows spinoff series.
“The cancellations come as Netflix, along with other outlets, considers what it has in its pipeline and how potentially long layoffs between seasons for its series might impact performance,” per The Hollywood Reporter.
The layoffs in concern are likely ones caused by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) refusing to strike a fair deal with the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and SAG-AFTRA, spurring both unions to go on strike.
The former’s strike ended in September after striking a deal with the AMPTP, while the latter’s ended earlier this month.
Glamorous, which debuted its 10-episode season on Netflix in June, followed Miss Benny as Marco Mejia, a makeup salesperson who lands their dream job with Cattrall’s Madolyn Addison.
Agent Elvis premiered in April 2023 with Matthew McConaughey in the titular role, while Jason Ritter led Capital Fall‘s voice cast when its season streamed in July 2023.
Frazar, which starred David Kaye, Jerry Minor, Dana Snyder, Kari Wahlgren, Grey Griffin, and the late Lance Reddick, has the earliest premiere and most prolonged time in TV limbo, with its season debuting in July 2022.
