Upload Season 3 Episodes 3 and 4 Review: Cyber Discount Day / Download Doctor

Reviews, Upload

Upload Season 3 Episode 3, “Cyber Discount Day,” and Upload Season 3 Episode 4, “Download Doctor,” have a decent amount going on, but the episodes are aimless in their purpose.

It’s unclear what the bigger arc of the season is going to be.

Nora and Nathan are returning drives, and there’s still the looming threat of corporate greed and sinister dealings being done by corporations.  We will have a couple of instances in separate storylines that will touch on that, but those moments are kinda off on their own.

Nothing feels connected, and if this were a 22-episode season, then some filler episodes would be perfectly fine. But we only get 8 episodes, so there’s no time for episodes that don’t have a clear focus.

I even hesitate to categorize “Cyber Discount Day” and “Download Doctor” as filler episodes because they are trying (and failing) to hint at something larger, plot-wise.

The various storylines are pulling us in too many different directions, and it’s unclear what the broader purpose is because there has to be a reason why, for instance, we go to a corporate meeting with Aleesha. It’s clear that there are dots we are supposed to connect, but everything is too vague right now.

And then there’s back up Nathan. He doesn’t feel like the same person as our Nathan, and not in a “he hasn’t experienced everything our Nathan has” kind of way.

We only see back up Nathan with Ingrid, and he acts as if he is head over heels in love with her. It feels like forever ago that the two of them were that in love, but that is currently back up Nathan’s entire personality/storyline.

We don’t see the other sides to Nathan. “Cyber Discount Day” and “Download Doctor” attempt to remedy that by having back up Nathan call his mom and finally mention Luke, but neither is enough.

Ingrid has come clean to him about her job, so we know there are good chunks of the day where back up Nathan is by himself, and we’re just supposed to assume he hangs out alone in his room and not with his best friend.

There’s not a good reason why Luke and back up Nathan haven’t run into each other at Lakeview. Keeping them apart feels like a stall tactic. What exactly is Upload stalling? Not sure, but that’s the only thing that makes sense.

These two episodes have quite a few problems, but they have their merits too.

One thing Upload continues to do well is the comedic moments. The show will have you laughing out loud and will put the biggest smile on your face. You never have to worry about that.

Upload Season 3 Episodes 3 and 4 also deliver on my wish for Season 3: Ingrid gets some character growth!

She continues to work on herself by coming clean to back up Nathan and being honest with Nathan. Nothing earth-shattering happens with Ingrid, but it is so wonderful to see her in a different light. The conversation between her and Nathan at the hug suit shop is a fantastic.

There’s still a long way to go with Ingrid, but Upload is finally headed in the right direction.
