Alec races to save the life of a young woman on The Irrational Season 1 Episode 4, “Zero Sum.”
After being approached by a distraught father whose daughter has been kidnapped, Alec agrees to take on the case to try and find her and return her to her family.

Unlike in past cases, Alec is not solving a murder or even an attempted murder. That immediately raises the stakes and the emotions.
Alec quickly realizes that there is something off about the case. For one, as the trailer reveals, the family that asks for Alec’s help isn’t wealthy and could never pay the ransom being asked of them. As Alec points out, why would someone kidnap a person from a family when they knew they couldn’t pay?
Clearly, there is more to this case than meets the eye, and family secrets are soon revealed that upends everyone’s assumptions.
Elsewhere on the episode, the preview photos show Rizwan leading one of Professor Mercer’s lectures, which should be a fun B plot on “Zero Sum.”
What viewers really want to know going into the episode, though, is if we will get any further developments regarding the explosion that gave Alec his burns after the FBI reopened the case on The Irrational Season 1 Episode 3, “The Barnum Effect.”
Having an official organization backing the investigation seems like it would accelerate Alec and Marsia’s progress. Then again, the FBI is a giant bureaucracy with its own internal politics, so maybe it will present just as many challenges as it does opportunities to find the truth.
