Young Love Trailer Released by Max
Young Love, an animated series that expands the world of Matthew A. Cherry’s Academy Award-winning short film Hair Love, is coming to Max later this month.
HBO Max, now Max, ordered a 12-episode season of the series from Sony Pictures Animation in July 2020. Young Love will debut with four episodes on Thursday, September 21; four new episodes will stream weekly until the season finale on October 5, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Created by Cherry, Young Love catches up with Black millennial parents Stephen (voiced by Scott Mescudi, aka Kid Cudi) and Angela (voiced by Issa Rae), their daughter Zuri (voiced by Brooke Monroe Conaway), and her pet cat Rocky as they “experience the relatable ups and downs of modern life,” per TV Line.

“In remission following a battle with cancer, Angela struggles to balance her work as a stylist with the demands of parenthood, while Stephen attempts to carve out a career as a musician in an ultra-competitive industry,” Young Love‘s synopsis continues.
The trailer shows that, amidst other crises, Angela wants to discover her calling and legacy. When Stephen suggests focusing on one problem at a time, Angela counters with, “I’m a woman. I can multitask.”
“Along with their fearless daughter Zuri, this tight-knit Chicago family juggles careers, marriage, parenthood, social issues, and multi-generational dynamics while striving to make a better life for themselves,” the show’s synopsis concludes.
Young Love‘s voice cast includes Loretta Devine and Harry Lennix as Angela’s parents, Gigi and Russell Young, Tamar Braxton as Star, Sheryl Lee Ralph as Sheree, and Debra Wilson providing additional voices.

Cherry showruns Young Love with long-time animation partner Carl Jones.
“I am beyond excited to continue telling the story of Stephen, Angela, and Zuri and further explore the family dynamics of a young Black millennial family we established in our short film Hair Love as an animated series,” Cherry said in July 2020.
“Couldn’t ask for better partners in Sony Pictures Animation and HBO Max in helping us get Young Love out to the world,” Cherry added.
Blue Key Entertainment’s Monica A. Young (producer of Hair Love) and Lion Forge Animation’s David Steward II and Carl Reed produce the show.
