Miracle Workers: End Times Season 4 Episode 7 Review: Roland Proudheart

Miracle Workers, Reviews

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.

As Miracle Workers: End Times Season 4 Episode 7, “Roland Proudheart,” trucks right along, it becomes more and more apparent that this season lacks the cohesiveness we’ve come to know from past seasons.

Once again, we have an episode that doesn’t directly correlate with any of the other episodes. It leaves us wondering just what exactly we are to expect as an endgame for these characters.

Between Sid wasting the whole episode on a brand new car and Freya switching roles with Scrapps, this one winds up being almost as bizarre as Miracle Workers: End Times Season 4 Episode 6, “Olympus.” Almost.

Sid Becomes a Car Bro

One of the great things about Sid, that we’ve gleaned from the episodes so far, is his natural ability to be himself and nothing else. He isn’t one to go with what everyone else is doing, he marches to the beat of his own drum.

Or at least he has until “Roland Proudheart” flips the script entirely. There can be fun in allowing characters to experience new things and express themselves in a new way, but this takes that too far.

Sid isn’t someone who would care more about a car than his wife or Scrapps. Nor would he become so obsessed with such things entirely overnight.

Sure, Tai is trying to help him get to work on time and not have to take public transportation. But, in the process of that, he somehow convinces Sid to buy the top car model currently on the market.

None of it really makes any sense, nor does any of it really have a place in the development of Sid. The minute the car is out of the picture, Sid becomes the character we know and love all over again.

So what is the point of it all in the first place?

This late in the season episodes shouldn’t be wasted on frivolous character changeups that lack motivation or purpose. The only positive thing to come out of the storyline is Tai and Sid spending time together like the friends Freya has longed for them to be.

Role Reversal? Could Be Interesting

While the Sid part of Miracle Workers: End Times Season 4 Episode 7, “Roland Proudheart,” leaves much to be desired, the parts involving Freya and Scrapps sort of makeup for it.

This whole time Scrapps has been the scene-stealer with his dog antics and silly lines of dialogue. Now, it’s his turn to be the center of attention, and it goes well for him at first, but soon turns into his worst nightmare.

One of the things that is most fascinating about Jon Bass is his ability to take what seems to be a 2-dimensional character and give it more depth and layers without much outward effort. We get to witness this in all its glory when Scrapps realizes his home village sees him as a hero.

Suddenly, Scrapps has a family and a history that doesn’t involve Freya or Sid. There is more to him than we’ve been told, and it keeps us interested throughout the run of his story.

It’s a subtle lesson on how all that glitters isn’t gold, and sometimes the simple life is much more rewarding than getting everything you could possibly ask for. Scrapps wanted to be appreciated more while also being treated with respect.

By gaining these things from his wife and children and fellow villagers, Scrapps is able to see beyond what he currently has with Freya. At first. it’s new and exciting, but pretty soon, he finds out that with this admiration also comes more responsibilities.

He doesn’t want to work his life away, so Scrapps finds new value in the love and affection he already has. This visit to his home village is necessary to help Scrapps grow.

Just like Freya being forced into the pet role in Scrapps home village will help her to be a better human. She still has miles to go to be as kind and gentle-hearted as her husband, but this experience is definitely a step in the right direction for her.

Despite Freya and Scrapps’ experiences being good for their overall growth, it still doesn’t fix this season’s glaring issue: lack of connectivity. In each episode, the characters go on another adventure, but none of it ever gets tied back to a previous event.

To be so close to the season’s end and still have no idea the actual journey we are supposed to be rooting for is disappointing.
