Harlan Coben’s Shelter Season 1 Episode 4 Review: Phantom Threads

Reviews

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.

After being completely blindsided by the final act reveal, the core case adds another layer with another disappearance and a new development but gets stuck on the high school musical, holding back the mystery on Harlan Coben’s Shelter Season 1 Episode 4, “Phantom Threads.”

“Phantom Threads” builds on the last hour as Mickey dives deeper into Ashley’s disappearance and how it connects to his father’s death. As Mickey deals with some big reveals, Ema and Spoon work through some high school-appropriate problems surrounding the seemingly random high musical announced at the end of the third hour.

Every aspect of the hour is entertaining, but the return to the mystery throws you off in a distracting way. However, the episode title feels accurate.

All Is Not Quite as It Seems with The Butcher of Lodz
Harlan Coben’s Shelter
Abby Corrigan (Ema Winslow), Jaden Michael (Mickey Bolitar), Adrian Greensmith (Arthur “Spoon” Spindell)

Things are not adding up as Mickey verifies the Butcher of Lodz’s identity with Mrs. Friedman, and he’s thrown the moment the photo is shown in the history book she has in hand. It’s a relief to know that they’re not relying on the speculative aspects of the genre. Opting to go the grimmer route feels logical in terms of the story and what we know of Mickey’s upbringing and presumably what his father did.

The fact that this man, who now has a name to match the face of Luther, had a blue butterfly on him only adds to the list of questions I have by the end of the hour.

The reveal of Ashley’s whereabouts and the connection to Lizzy Sobeck is well done, peeling each detail back in an organic way that plays well with how the A-story has been laid out up to this point. It’s an intriguing development but only raises questions about how Lizzy is connected to the human trafficking ring, Luther, and whatever Ashley is involved in.

Is Shira’s Love Story Over?
Harlan Coben’s Shelter
Missi Pyle (Hannah), Constance Zimmer (Shira Bolitar)

Between the pancake breakfast and the ice cream date, Shira is dealing with feelings associated with her blast from the past, Hannah. I like that we get a flashback to the pair’s senior prom night, interspersed with her cringy, impromptu speech.

It’s a delightful insight into their relationship and where things stood before Shira took off after graduation. The fact that we get confirmation that the pair feel the same way about each other, and Shira had no idea back then, is a bit of a punch in the gut, especially with Hannah being married.

Constance Zimmer is pulling the weight for the adult case regarding range as Shira’s out here living out a second-chance romance.

And Then There’s Phantom of The Opera…
Harlan Coben’s Shelter
Jaden Michael (Mickey Bolitar), Adrian Greensmith (Arthur “Spoon” Spindell)

This is the one plot line that confuses me from when it’s introduced and continues through this hour with the auditions and the cast list is revealed. Granted, watching Ema and Spoon sing and how they ruin Buck’s Day is entertaining. It’s seemingly missing the connection to the story’s core and how it contributes to developing it aside from reminding viewers that the late Mr. V is connected to Lizzy Sobeck.

It brings its own entertainment and fun with Antonio Cipriano’s Broadway background, which shines through with his Phantom of the Opera song.

Random Thoughts:

  • I know it’s a matter of plot movement, but couldn’t The Butcher of Lodz’s identity be something that he could verify with his internet capabilities?
  • Shira’s response to her fitness watch is wholly relatable.
