A League of Their Own Season 2 Scrapped by Prime Video

A League of Their Own, News

A worrisome trend takes to the field as Prime Video scraps the previously announced shortened second and final season of A League of Their Own.

The TV series that tells the story of a new generation of women who dream of playing professional baseball, evoking the spirit of Penny Marshall’s 1992 film of the same name, premiered its eight-episode debut season in August 2022.

Nearly a year passed before The Hollywood Reporter exclusively shared that A League of Their Own would return with an abbreviated four-episode final season.

Cut to August 2023, where Deadline exclusively reports that the show’s cancellation is “believed to stem from the length of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which have delayed TV production, creating large gaps between seasons and making shows miss their target release dates.”

As previously reported, the Writers Guild of America has been on strike since May 2, 2023, after the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) failed to present a fair deal to the guild. Meanwhile, the actors in SAG-AFTRA have been on strike since July 13, 2023, because negotiations fell apart with AMPTP.

Co-creator, co-showrunner, executive producer, and star Abbi Jacobson posted about A League of Their Own‘s fate on Instagram, writing, “To blame this cancellation on the strike is bullshit and cowardly. But this post isn’t about all that. About all the ways this show has been put through the ringer. Not today.”

Jacobson’s post went on to celebrate the show that the team made. Meanwhile, co-creator and co-showrunner Will Graham echoed similar sentiments in a tweet responding to a fan’s condolences about the show’s cancellation because of the strikes, “Thank you for saying that. But this really isn’t because of the strike at all.”

A League of The Own follows Jacobson’s Carson and Chanté Adams’ Max “and a new ensemble of sharp and hilarious characters as they carve their paths toward the field, along the way finding their teams and themselves,” per the show’s logline.

Produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television in association with Field Trip Productions, the show also stars D’Arcy Carden, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Roberta Colindrez, Nick Offerman, Saidah Arrika Ekulona, Kate Berlant, Kendall Johnson, Kelly McCormack, Alex Désert, Priscilla Delgado, Aaron Jennings, Molly Ephraim, Melanie Field, and Dale Dickey.

In its reporting of the news about A League of Their Own‘s cancellation, The Hollywood Reporter relayed that its sources say Sony Pictures Television plans to shop the show “with the hopes that the series can find a new home” for that previously announced second season.

The same article reiterates that the scripts for those four episodes were complicated before the WGA went on strike, and that reps for Amazon declined to comment on Friday, August 18.

A League of Their Own is the second Prime Video show to see its sophomore season reversed at the streaming service yesterday. Prime Video also canceled the sci-fi drama starring Chlöe Grace Moretz, The Peripheral, per Deadline‘s exclusive report that, again, cites the strikes as the reason for the show’s end.

It was renewed in February 2023, after The Peripheral Season 1 Episode 8, “The Creation of a Thousand Forests,” aired in December. The Hollywood Reporter notes that The Peripheral “is the first show to have an order rescinded with the strikes cited as the reason for the un-renewal.”

With The Peripheral as the first and A League of Their Own as the second over a few hours, it’s unfortunate that this new trend in TV will likely persist as the AMPTP prolongs the strikes by avoiding finding a fair deal with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA.

A League of Their Own is also executive produced by Hailey Wierengo, Desta Tedros Reff, and Jamie Babbit.

A League of Their Own is streaming on Prime Video.
