‘Interview with the Vampire’ Sinks Its Teeth Into San Diego Comic-Con with Killer Fan Experience
With a killer revamp, AMC Network’s undead returned to San Diego Comic-Con to terrorize locals.
For the first time in ages, con-goers were greeted not by The Walking Dead‘s army of zombies but by vampires and witches soaking in the spooky venue.
The immortals of Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire and Mayfair Witches series resurrected the Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter in their image with “The Street of Immortality,” a New Orleans-inspired haunt of crooning entertainers and lively 1920 facades.

Unquestionably the best activation San Diego Comic-Con had to offer this year, Immortal Universe fans were spared no expense.
As guests arrived at Storyville, the staff gave us a tote bag to load up with goodies, including a Talamasca agent notebook and a stunning Interview with the Vampire poster.
Additionally, AMC handed out souvenir visitor guides featuring menacing warnings and superb drawings of street landmarks like Hotel Iberville and Mayfair Talismans. Indeed, all the best events start with threats to your life and free merch.
From there, locals escorted fans into a rustic speakeasy bathed in darkness, with only a lantern at the bar to illuminate our friendly barkeep. He expertly established a menacing mood with tales of Louis and Lestat’s odd behavior, and sneaky actors infiltrated the crowd to keep listeners on their toes.
Finally, the speakeasy portion of our tour concluded with a sampling of “The Elixir of Immortality.”

At this point, thick red drinks were passed out in the dark, triggering war flashbacks to the Interview with the Vampire season finale. Thankfully no vampires appeared, and we enjoyed sweet pomegranate shots that tasted oddly like Fireball whiskey.
Without a doubt, the implication that Louis or Lestat chose the most fratboy drink to pass off as an immortal elixir is hilarious.
The tasty mocktail was just the opening act as actors led our group into the bustling Street of Immortality to be greeted by dozens of performers milling about. From expert tap dancers to casual storytellers eager to share the French Quarter’s juicy gossip, this activation’s sights and sounds were bewitching.
As visitors soaked in the New Orleans-style shop fronts, they were greeted by transfixing live music and nods to the shows through vibrant street art.

Highlights of our stroll through Storyville include a stop at Mayfair’s Talismans, where stylish witches greeted fans.
They offered groups a choice between a sage bundle, gris-gris, or effigy. The details that went into these talismans were impressive, with meticulously crafted voodoo charms and herb bundles plucked right from Mayfair Witches. An elegant recipe card also accompanied each talisman.
Next, staff handed fans drawn toward the live music sheets for Lestat’s hit single “Come to Me,” which included a cheeky Théâtre des Vampires advertisement.
This sheet music was also a great memento to accompany the singer’s haunting rendition outside Nawlins Records.
The live entertainer aspect of this activation was a brilliant way to adapt these shows for fan interaction and allow guests to feel like they were being whisked away from the hotel terrace to another world.

Perhaps the most captivating vignette was the salt circle outside Louis and Lestat’s home. Visitors were encouraged to leave offerings, which became a neat way for fans to leave their mark on this experience.
And offers included everything from effigies to jam jars to beautiful hand-crafted love letters from Lestat to Louis.
Subsequently, walking into this activation felt like slipping back in time to indulge in the rich gothic vibrancy of Interview with the Vampire‘s world. The taboo-like sets also allowed guests to float through the street at their own pace taking in the skill sets of each entertainer.
Moreover, the actors were excellent, whether casually engaging with stranglers or playing the unnerving vampires inhabiting the photo booth.
Their ensemble work established a flow of engagement from the entrance to the exit, immersing fans in the bit the entire time.

Lastly, we must acknowledge the larger-than-life poster installations that held SDCC hostage. The Théâtre des Vampires signs, teasing something sinister beyond their front gate, greeted the mortals brave enough to visit with an activation that breezed through standby lines with supernatural speed.
Furthermore, the offsite ensured umbrellas were on hand so no suspected vampires burst into flames, and the line staff kept spirits high with their infectious energy.
The shorter wait times, troves of exclusive merch, and a feeling you could stay forever once you got into the venue made The Street of Immortality the place to be.
We can only hope Anne Rice’s immortals will consider a permanent stay at Comic-Con.
