Has The Winchesters Been Renewed?

News, The Winchesters

Unfortunately, The Winchesters has been canceled by the CW. The Supernatural spin-off joins the evergrowing list of canceled CW shows. This list includes Walker Independence and Kung Fu. The Winchesters’ season finale set the series up for a new chapter with Mary and John heading off to travel and find new adventures and new monsters.

On May 11, TVLine reported news of The Winchesters’ cancellation. According to an official statement, The CW had a tough time coming to this decision and the company is grateful for the show’s “creativity and dedication.”

Despite The Winchesters’ cancellation, hope remains. The series executive producer, Jensen Ackles posted a video on his Instagram with the cast. Meg Donnelly, Drake Rodger, Nida Khurshid, and Jojo Fleites all appear in the video. They ask fans to use the hashtag #SaveTheWinchesters to hopefully get another network to pick up the show for more seasons.

This campaign may work because the Supernatural fans are a passionate bunch. Additionally, Variety recently made an announcement that Jensen Ackles and Danneel Ackles have a new first-look TV deal with Amazon. In October 2020, Variety also reported that this deal began with Warner Bros. Television, but has now shifted to Amazon.

The deal allows the Ackles’ production company Chaos Machine to develop original television programming that Amazon gets the opportunity to make an offer to buy first. Since The Winchesters is already an existing property, the first-look deal doesn’t matter in this case. However, because Jensen Ackles has a relationship with Amazon, the opportunity to sell the show there may present itself.

The Winchesters’ 13-episode Season aired from October 2022 to March 7, 2023. It stars Meg Donnelly as Mary Campbell and Drake Rodger as John Winchester. Nida Khurshida and Jojo Fleites play their friends Latika and Carlos. The Supernatural prequel follows Mary and John as they first meet and begin monster hunting together.

It focuses on the progression of their relationship as well as how these monsters reflect their inner struggles. It includes the appearance of some Supernatural favorites, such as Dean Winchester, who acts as the narrator.

Jensen spoke with EW and revealed that there is a five-season plan for The Winchesters. He’s hopeful that the show will get a chance to come back and thrive for several seasons. Jensen Ackles also talked about his optimism about the series’ chances to find a new home.

“But I do have this crazy optimism for this show and I think it largely resides in the energy that we found on set with this cast and this crew. That crazy optimism is one of the reasons why this show made it on air in the first place, and I think it’s one of the several reasons why the show should continue somewhere.”

The former CW show digs deeper into the past of the Winchesters while establishing its own lore and identity. The season finale (maybe the series finale) offers a major twist that shakes up the potential for future storylines.

The Winchesters Season 1 is available to stream on the CW app and HBO Max.
