Rabbit Hole Season 1 Episode 4 Review: The Person in Your Ear

Rabbit Hole, Reviews

Rabbit Hole Season 1 Episode 4, “The Person in Your Ear,” finds John and company leaving the shelter of their new, creepy safehouse to do a bit of investigating.

While this isn’t a bad episode by any means, it’s still not measuring up to the adrenaline rush of Rabbit Hole Season 1 Episodes 1 and 2. When you’re introduced to the series in a high-octane way, anything less than that feels slow.

But “The Person in Your Ear” is an improvement over Rabbit Hole Season 1 Episode 3, “The Algorithms of Control,” because it’s not dull. We’ve abandoned the history lesson and thankfully started making progress on Miles’ connection to Crowley.

Miles’ communication data being what brings us to Crowley is smart. Crowley’s still this almost mythical big bad, someone so secretive and untouchable who is responsible for horrendous things. But, we know Miles.

Sure, we have questions about how Miles switched sides, but he’s someone we, and John, can understand and make sense of. He’s a more accessible person to focus the investigation on and then build up to Crowley.

There’s something about this series that isn’t quite working, and it involves the characters.

From the beginning, we see John being paranoid about everyone and everything, and the show has made it clear that it wants us to also be skeptical of everyone we meet. Rabbit Hole has also shown us multiple examples of why we should be wary of everyone too.

So, we don’t trust anyone, making it nearly impossible to get attached to any of the characters assisting John. There’s not a ragtag team to fall in love with, although “The Person in Your Ear” certainly portrays Ben, John, Edward Homm, and Hailey as a team.

Edward, at least, is what he appears — there aren’t any suspicious scenes of him sneaking around and checking his phone. He’s just a hostage who wants to take down Crowley and see his wife again. So, it’s easier to trust his motives.

Hailey, however, is still a mystery.

We seemingly get answers about one of the mysteries surrounding her — she stole crypto from her last employer, and it appears that is what she was checking on her phone during “The Algorithms of Control.”

That theft is also why the blue Mercedes was following her and attempted to abduct her on Rabbit Hole Season 1 Episode 2, “At Any Given Moment.”

But, checking your crypto balance while on the run and after being repeatedly told not to use a phone does not make any sense. There’s no reason why she would risk her life to see how much her crypto is worth, and it’s not as if she is in need of money right this second either. Something else has to be going on.

We also still don’t know why a fake profile of John appeared on her dating app. It can’t be a coincidence, and hopefully, the show circles back to this mystery soon. So while Rabbit Hole does give us some answers about her, we’re somehow still left with more questions.
