Andre Anthony Talks Netflix’s ‘The Night Agent’ and ‘Scream VI’ [Interview]

Interviews

Netflix’s latest action-thriller series, The Night Agent, follows an FBI agent whose sole duty is to operate a phone that never rings in the White House basement until one night it does and intermixes him in a conspiracy that leads back to the nation’s leaders.

I recently spoke with Andre Anthony about his role in The Night Agent, the filming process, his experience on the Scream VI set, and more. (You can watch the full interview below.)

On The Night Agent, Anthony plays Matteo/Colin, a character(s) clouded with mystery until their big reveal midway through the series.

“What I love about these two is that you don’t really know what’s going on, and it kind of just keeps you guessing up until that reveal,” Anthony began.

Anthony said that he got a laugh at the confusion from friends and family because he tried to keep the secret about his character for as long as he could.

“I’d get these hilarious emojis and ‘holy shit, what is going on?’ It was also really fun to play both the twins. It was an interesting process to try and understand who Colin is, who Matteo is, and who Colin is when he assumes Mateo’s identity. So there’s a lot of intricacies there, which was really fun to explore.”

The Night Agent is Anthony’s first time playing a villain, which he enjoyed immensely. He said taking a darker turn with the two characters was a thrill.

“A lot of the homework was just going over all the scripts and really understanding Mateo’s motivation, why he does what he does, trying to understand whose side he’s on, and how he’s working together with his co-conspirators.”

“What was really fun about this project, in particular, was I got to do a lot of the fight choreography and work with firearm professionals. That was interesting and something that I would love to hopefully bring to future projects. I had never done that before, so that was a cool experience,” Anthony continued.

A significant appeal of The Night Agent is the immensely fast-paced action. Anthony praised the stunt team, along with head star Gabriel Basso, who he says did most of his own stunts.

However, outside of the action, he said the series also does an impeccable job of appealing to the audiences and making them care for the characters early on in the pilot.

“It’s a mixture of the action, character work, and then the suspense. In every episode, you’re kind of wondering who’s involved, who did what, and they always leave you with quite the cliffhanger,” Anthony said.

He added that he would be interested in playing more villain roles if they come his way in the future.

“It’s funny because as an actor, I always find that some of the characters that are so far from who you are can sometimes be the most fun because you’re just kind of going for it 100%. You’re not too concerned about playing too close to yourself.”

While attending the University of Southern California, Anthony began his acting career on a student project called underGRAD, helmed by his friend.

However, even with The Night Agent being the biggest project of his career and a different genre from most of his other roles, he said he still approaches them all the same way.

Outside of The Night Agent, Anthony can be seen in the recent slasher film Scream VI during one of the scenes at the beginning of the film as Frankie, a drunk fraternity member, at a house party.

Unlike Matteo/Colin, Frankie isn’t necessarily a villain, but his presence within the film is meant to distract the audience and hypothesis when/if he’d reappear.

“I think that one of the reasons for having that character is wondering like, ‘okay, he’s still alive. So, is there going to be something later on?’ I think they kind of left that open-ended for the audience to wonder,” Anthony said.

Anthony said he had auditioned for a few different roles before landing the part of Frankie, but after it was confirmed, he was on a plane within 48 hours.

“What was cool about that experience is the stuff that I was working on was at the very beginning of production, so it was the first few days. So when I got there, pretty much all of the other cast members and the filmmakers were just getting there as well.”

“It was a nice time to get to know everybody a little bit before and have that welcoming environment before we actually got to the work,” Anthony continued.

He attributes his incredibly positive experience on set to interactions with the entire cast, from the actors to the crew and directors.

“Going into it, I was a little bit nervous, you know, a lot of the cast had come back from Scream Five. It was definitely something that I won’t forget, and you definitely are aware of the magnitude of what this franchise brings just from, you know, fans, theories, and that kind of stuff. I was really lucky to be a part of it.”

Anthony has various people in mind who’d he like to collaborate with in the future, but one of his main prospects is Benicio Del Toro.

“He’s done so many good things, but he did a mini-series called Escape at Dannemora, and I really loved that. I watched that, and then I just finished watching Severance, and Ben Stiller was the director for both of those. I love what he’s doing as a filmmaker.”

The Night Agent is available to stream on Netflix.
