The Winchesters Season 1 Episode 9 Review: Cast Your Fate To The Wind

Reviews, The Winchesters

Vampires return to The CW. However, The Winchesters Season 1 Episode 9, “Cast Your Fate to the Wind” proves that they aren’t always memorable.

This episode creates a vampire lore that isn’t like the pop culture norm. The gang even mentions that these vampires don’t follow the movie bloodsuckers’ standards. That’s not exactly a good thing.

These vampires are boring — the ultimate monster sin.

They aren’t scary or sexy and are just a nuisance in this ongoing battle with the Akrida. Maybe it’s because they’re followers instead of leaders, but nothing about them screams cool.

This is unfortunate because one would assume that the 70s is a great era to be a vampire.

The stakes aren’t high with these creatures because we know that this is not where John’s story ends.

This makes the coolest part about “Cast Your Fate to the Wind,” the scene where Mary fights them. The vampires not being a real threat to John’s future doesn’t take away from the allure of the unknown.

Theoretically, Supernatural has already shown us where Mary and John’s story ends. However, they are not invincible on The Winchesters.

Anything can happen when magic and creatures come into play. Therefore, John could die again.

Additionally, he could also stay dead. Dean entering the picture lets us know that time and fate may not be linear in this show.

Anything can happen.

Mary and John are officially a couple. However, can it last? That’s another great unknown.

The episode shows how they are very into each other. Nonetheless, more obstacles must stand in their way to introduce multiple chapters of their story.

The show may have taken the Mary and John romance leap a little too soon. Yet, they also can only drag it out so long. There is no easy answer on how to approach the John and Mary romance.

For now, we must just enjoy the ride of seeing their love story play out. It seems like they may make it work at least until The Winchesters Season 1 finale.

If the CW renews the show for Season 2, then we may eventually see some sort of reset (amnesia, perhaps?).

A reset could allow restrictions on their current relationship to fade away. John and Mary can marry on the finale and it won’t matter.

It may all be undone eventually.

A possible eventual reset allows the writers to go all in on Mary and John. This may mean a (temporary) happily ever after.

Disappointingly, Dean’s appearance is only a small portion of “Cast Your Fate to the Wind.” It’s appealing to let things linger with him and wait for a big revelation.

However, a few more breadcrumbs may make the wait a little more appetizing. Let us know a little more about if he’s still in the past.

We don’t need the full meal of what’s going on with Dean, but a few more breadcrumbs to let us have something to nibble.

Stray Thoughts
  • Glad to see Kyle back, especially since his character basically just vanishes.
  • Also, happy to see he plays a key role in everything.
  • Betty seems like she may be the show’s first recurring character casualty
  • The Winchesters loves Carlos’s hair a little too much. However, holy water hair is funny.
