Miss Scarlet and The Duke Season 3 Episode 6 Review: The Jewel Of The North
When Eliza, Nash, Moses, and William get bombs mailed to them, the race is on to figure out how they’re connected and who is responsible on the intriguing Miss Scarlet and The Duke Season 3 Episode 6, “The Jewel of the North.”
The last case of the season sets the scene for quite a few events, from a shocking announcement by Moses, a new location for Nash & Sons, a job offer, and some potentially essential questions whose answers could change a few existing dynamics.
Because William is one of the four recipients of an inactive bomb, he gets kicked off the case as the Head of Investigations in Ireland, Hudson, takes over. William joins Eliza, Nash, and Moses, who all oddly become targets for what Hudson surmises as the “Irish Home Rule Movement.”

This aspect of the case is curious, especially as someone who is not as well-informed on that aspect of Victorian England, but it makes sense that they don’t pull that thread any further than they do throughout the hour.
I must ask, though, what Hudson’s motivation to narrow the suspect list so much and the fact that there doesn’t seem to have much of a tie into the final reveal is a nice subversion of the “corruption” aspect that I’ve discussed before.
Because they are less than helpful witnesses and sources to Hudson, Nash and Eliza get their licenses suspended, and Moses gets intimidated. Obviously, William must stop working and take a leave of absence.

Of course, because these are four people who are determined and, for all intents and purposes, as stubborn as they are well-suited for their professions, they find a way to partner up and figure out exactly who the culprit is.
This is honestly the best and most excellent team-up I’ve seen on the show.
The group chemistry is fantastic throughout the hour as William and Nash try to out-inform each other. At the same time, Moses sits back, watching as Eliza takes over the whole operation, reining things in and delegating. It’s a favorite scene of mine from the finale and I wish we could get more of this before the finale.

It’s hilarious to watch as it is unexpectedly endearing as all three men break it down and accept that she’s in charge.
The team-up is short-lived, as Moses and Nash find themselves instigators of a bar fight while Eliza and William head to a jewelry store for a possible lead on their suspect. Obviously, this gives the pair an opening to talk.
How could you end the season without an actual conversation about the prime object of avoidance between Eliza and William – Arabella.
Arabella’s jealousy of how closely William works with Eliza and his fond storytelling of Eliza’s attempts in the kitchen doesn’t help those feelings at all. It’s suddenly clear in this hour that she deeply understands the emotions and the relationship William and Eliza have.

You can’t fault Arabella for her decisions by the end of “The Jewel of the North” about her romantic future with the Inspector. Arabella’s parting words pack a sting, offering an incredibly harsh truth about any potential future with Eliza would be.
There’s something sweet about how William eventually finds a way to tell her that he’s missed her and the time they spent together. But as the scene plays out, I can’t help but remember a question I had earlier in the season about how sustainable their tenuous dynamic is.
They both know how the other feels and haven’t necessarily made strides toward some middle ground. So, where does that leave them after the breakup and the job offer?
Moses: And in my experience, the more you want, the less you get.
Eliza: Well, I want many things.
Moses: Then take my advice, choose one.
This moment gets no points on subtlety but so many points on the insight scale. Particularly Eliza’s situation. It’s just such a good line and manages to stick with you when thinking about what the future looks like for everyone.
Nash’s job offer to Eliza at the end of the hour juxtaposes William’s final conversation with Arabella, putting them both at different crossroads and making me excited to see what they do next season.
They can’t keep dangling this “will they or won’t they” for much longer—right?
Overall, it’s an entertaining end to a fun season that offers a bookend on a few arcs while cracking open a few big arcs for Eliza, William, and Moses.
Random Thoughts
- The fact that Ivy is missing out on all of this is a TRAVESTY.
- Moses’s story time is a delight though it causes quite a bit of concern to hear about the possibility of losing Moses to Nash and his Paris office. It is a relief to hear that he’s still thinking it over by the end of the hour.
- I will need them to find reasons for Nash, Moses, and William to work together again as a unit on their own and with Eliza leading things. It’s such a fun dynamic that should be capitalized on.
- Who knew that William was such a romantic? That cover story proposal is so sweet.
- That small gift box on Eliza’s desk had me for a quick second. It’s only now that I’m writing this that I am starting to think of the implications. Am I overthinking this?
