Masterpiece Executive Producer Sussane Simpson released a statement exclusively to Deadline about the show’s ending.

Sanditon has been an incredibly special series for Masterpiece, and we know it has found its way into the hearts of countless fans. While we are sad to say goodbye to the series, we know our audience has a lot to look forward to in this new season,” Simpson shared.

The series, based on Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel, follows “the high-spirited and independent heroine, Charlotte Heywood” at “the picturesque coastal resort of Sanditon.”

Sanditon Season 2 Episode 6 saw Alison’s wedding, Georgina learning that her mother is alive, and Charlotte and Ralph becoming engaged.

Masterpiece has revealed some details about the upcoming third and final season. “You’re going to see parties, you’re going to see glam…it’s a highly caffeinated Sanditon,” Crystal Clarke who plays Georgina Lamb, told Masterpiece.

“In Season 3, we see characters meeting with their own unique challenges and really having to dig into deep parts of themselves to find resolve,” Rose Williams, who portrays Charlotte Heywood, added.

“I think Season 3 will bring even more excitement, romance, fun, and tears in both forms,” said Ben Lloyd-Hughes

Sanditon‘s returning cast for its third season includes Williams, Clarke, Lloyd-Huges, Kris Marshall, Kate Ashfield, Anne Reid, Jack Fox, Turlough Convery, Sophie Winkleman, Cai Brigden, and more.

Sanditon was initially canceled after its first season. However, in May 2021, Masterpiece announced that the romantic drama would return for a second and third season.

The announcement included that streaming service BritBox UK would be the UK partner. A day later, additional information regarding the show’s upcoming seasons revealed that Theo James would not return as Sidney Parker.

Masterpiece assured fans that the story would go on for Charlotte, even without Sidney, sharing “an abundance of romance and adventure lies ahead for the Sanditon heroine.”

Theo James released a statement to Masterpiece about his decision to leave the series. “Although I relished playing Sidney, for me, I’ve always maintained that his journey concluded as I wanted it to,” James said.

“The broken fairy-tale like ending between Charlotte and Sidney is different, unique and so interesting to me and I wish the cast and crew of Sanditon every success with future series,” James concluded.

A few months later, Masterpiece revealed cast additions for Season 2 — Ben Lloyd-Huges as Alexander Colbourne, Tom Weston-Jones as Colonel Francis Lennox, Rosie Graham as Alison Heywood, Maxim Ays as Captain William Carter, Frank Blake as Captain Declan Fraser, and Alexander Vlahos as Charles Lockhart.

Sanditon Season 3’s newcomers include Emma Fielding as Lady Montrose, “the quintessential Austen Mother,” who arrives in Sanditon to find matches for her children Lydia and Henry.

Alice Orr-Ewing joins as the independent Lydia “who is not as eager a match as her mother,” while Edward Davis will play the “charismatic and confident” Lord Henry Montrose, who “holds a secret.”

Additionally, James Bolam joins as the “wealthy, curmudgeonly investor” Rowleigh Pryce, who shows interest in teaming up with Tom Parker on the resort’s expansion, but their plans are complicated by a run-in with Lady Denham.

Alexander’s brother, “a lawyer and a charming bachelor,” Samuel Colbourne, also comes to Sanditon Season 3. He is played by Liam Garrigan.

Andrew Davies adapted Sanditon. Justin Young took over as lead writer and executive producer for Seasons 2 and 3. Red Planet Pictures produces the series.

Sanditon Season 3 premieres on Sunday, March 19 at 9/8c on PBS.
