The Resident Season 6 Episode 6 Review: For Better or Worse

Reviews, The Resident

It is rare that an episode can be labeled as perfect, but The Resident Season 6 Episode 6, “For Better or Worse,” deserves it. The show delivers an incredible episode with a heartfelt case and the wedding everyone’s been waiting for.

Even though Bell, now Mr. Voss (yes, Kit, we are stealing the nickname), was gone for the majority of the season, his comeback during The Resident Season 6 Episode 5, “A River in Egypt,” prepared us for what would be an amazing return to action.

“For Better or Worse” delivers the best we have seen of Randolph Bell in a really long time, putting him at the center of the action and giving him the happy ending he earned.

As the show celebrates its 100th episode, everyone expects it to give us a happy episode. But would it be The Resident without plot twists and a roller coaster of emotions?

Kitbell’s wedding goes down to second place (for the majority of the episode) to give room to one of the most emotional cases we have seen at Chastain in a very long time.

Usually, when emotions run high in the emergency room, it means someone close to the doctors is involved. This time around, The Resident shows us differently.

Yes, it does delay Bell’s arrival to his own wedding, but it doesn’t have any strings attached to the doctors — besides the possibility of a large donation towards the hospital.

This allows us to see the doctors doing what they do best: medicine. Everyone wants the little girl and her mom to make it, but they focus more on the symptoms and the treatment than the emotions.

The best internist, as Bell calls Conrad, is doing his best to figure out what is going on with the patient. This proves that the almighty Conrad doesn’t always have an answer and relies on his colleagues more than we realize on a weekly basis.

However, Doctor Bell is the one who gets to shine. For most of Season 5, he was undergoing a new treatment for his MS. But, now he’s stronger than ever.

For those who remember Season 1 very clearly, we remember Bell wasn’t always at his best. As a result, he messed up, and many patients died at his table.

“For Better or Worse” shows he is a fine surgeon who has come a long way and is now one of the best at Chastain.

This case brings Bell full circle on his redemption arc and is one of the most satisfactory ways to celebrate the 100th episode of The Resident.

A close second to shining the brightest is Cade Sullivan. As she can connect with the patient because she is the only doctor who knows ASL, she feels in her element, probably for the first time at Chastain.

But this time, the feeling expands from her professional to her personal life. Kit and Bell invited her to the wedding as more than Conrad’s plus one “like I’m finally part of the group.”

The doctors at Chastain are a very tight group of people, and it is hard for new characters to make it into the inner circle. As Cade says, this invitation means she finally made it — something that makes us as happy as it makes her.

Because she is very attached to the case, she cannot make it to the wedding, which makes the love triangle between her, Conrad, and Billie even more present on The Resident.

Watching Billie and Conrad dance, we can tell something more is happening between the characters. We’ve known for a while that Billie has feelings for Conrad, but what about him?

Is Conrad going to cross the line? Actually, multiple lines: sleeping with her dead wife’s best friend, cheating on Cade, and turning Gigi’s world upside down.

The moment we had all been waiting for on “For Better or Worse” does not disappoint at all. On the contrary, it leaves us Kitbell shippers feeling warm and fuzzy inside.

A huge part of Bell’s redemption arc relies on his relationship with Kit Voss. In the same way, his participation in the case brings it full circle, and so does the wedding.

In particular, The Resident does a fantastic job clarifying this in the bride and groom’s vows. “Thank you for waiting for me to become the man I am now,” says Bell.

Everyone involved in the wedding knows this is true. We have all followed him and their relationship closely, knowing he changed when he met her.

As fans, it is beautiful to see some of our favorite characters finally living their best lives and finding their happy endings. If you are still off about Bell, you can at least be happy for Kit Voss, who deserves the absolute world.

Even though I am extremely happy for Bell, I continue to be disappointed by Ian as we wait for that moment that will trigger his redemption.

It looks like we will be waiting all season long.

Jessica and Leela do suspect something is wrong with him when he starts acting weird during the surgery. Hopefully, this will lead to more people paying close attention to his actions.

Ian can potentially be a likable character that we all end up rooting for. However, his addiction continues to beat him and leaves us expecting more of him.

Stray Observations
  • Kit getting on television to appeal to the governor by focusing on her family is very on-brand for her and the show. Chastain is all about its people and the connections they form, so hopefully, that will avoid the funding cuts the governor is thinking of making.
  • Ian invites Leela to operate because he needs help but doesn’t admit it. However, by challenging her to prove she is as good as everyone says, he shows he does pay attention to what goes on around the hospital. There is nothing Leela loves more than a challenge.
  • It was very thoughtful to have Gigi and Sammie be the flower girls at the wedding because it involves everyone in this Chastain found family.
