Quantum Leap Season 1 Episode 4 Review: A Decent Proposal
Quantum Leap Season 1 Episode 4, “A Decent Proposal,” drops a few narrative bombshells while the show continues to find its footing, with a fun appearance from Justin Hartley.
One of the episode’s most impactful moments has nothing to do with Ben but with Magic and his connection to Sam Beckett. Magic disclosing his experience with Sam leaping into him is a significant plot point in this new series, one that the writers handle well while tethering it to the original Quantum Leap.
It makes the possibility of Sam running into Ben all the more plausible, especially given Magic’s initial mission to locate Sam. Watching Ben and Sam interact would make for a fun viewing experience.

That said, the series doesn’t feel like it can stand entirely on its own two feet yet. The callbacks, Easter eggs, and references are helpful tools for drawing in the older demographic while putting fresh faces to the fore to pull the younger generations into the show’s orbit. However, there’s a fear that Quantum Leap might rely too heavily on those nods and bank too hard on nostalgia to wade through its freshman season.
So far, the series misses some of the original’s charm and heart. That’s not to say it’s fully devoid of those qualities. We see glimpses of that charm and heart lingering between Ben and Addison and in the scene with Ian and Jenn. But that’s it. The show ostensibly tiptoes around that without going all-in.
It makes one wonder whether we would’ve been better off not essentially starting the pilot with Ben’s leap. We still don’t fully know these characters yet, and the chemistry leaves something to be desired. There’s also a certain woodenness in the acting, with the dialogue occasionally weighing down those performances.

However, it’s not all subpar. Ben regaining his memory of Addison in “A Decent Proposal” feels fitting, given Ben leaping into a woman whose boyfriend proposes. Plus, the intermittent visions of Ben lying with Addison gradually becoming clearer as the episode progresses is a nice touch. Thankfully, the writers aren’t dragging out Ben’s memory loss from the initial leap. Having him recover those memories in, say, episode 16 would’ve killed the show’s momentum.
Justin Hartley is a welcome addition to the gang in “A Decent Proposal.” Raymond Lee continues to shine as Quantum Leap‘s fulcrum. One of the most entertaining aspects of this show is watching Ben struggle to adapt to a new environment. Lee portrays the nuances of memory-bereft Ben and the Ben we briefly met in 2022 with ease and charisma. He’s the show’s charming center.
“A Decent Proposal” is Quantum Leap‘s best episode yet, despite some hiccups. Magic’s story and Ben regaining his memory of Addison are major plot points that catapult the narrative forward. This show has so much potential. It’s on the verge of a breakthrough. The questions are enough to keep us entertained. Will the series rise to the challenge, or will our faith be misplaced?

Stray Observations:
- We can safely say that Jake’s remark about Diana and Charles not working out is 100 percent true.
- Fun fact: Justin Hartley and Sofia Pernas are married in real life, making Jake’s instant distrust and loathing of Carla funnier in hindsight.
- Was this reviewer the only one who wanted to see Lee and Hartley kiss? You gotta commit to your roles a little more, Ben!
- Ian never misses in the fashion department. That red and black blazer is envy-inducing.
- The interior of Union Station feels like such a blast from the past. Here’s hoping the city of LA preserves it as it is.
