Doctor Who, News

The BBC and Disney Branded Television banded together to transform Doctor Who into a global franchise with a new logo and a new streaming home, extending the beloved science-fiction universe’s reach.

Disney+ is now the exclusive home for new seasons of Doctor Who outside of the UK and Ireland. New episodes will premiere on BBC and Disney+ beginning in late 2023.

The new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, announced the exciting news on Live with Kelly and Ryan. The first glimpse of Gatwa as the two-hearted alien can be seen in the first teaser for new episodes of Doctor Who, coming in November 2023 to coincide with the 60th anniversary.

The teaser also reveals a sneak peek at David Tennant’s reprisal of his role as the Doctor and Catherine Tate’s return as the Doctor’s companion, Donna Noble. The BBC announced their return to the series in May of this year.

Tennant’s return, which spans three specials, marks him as the Fourteenth Doctor. Ncuti Gatwa will take over as the Fifteenth Doctor over the holiday season in 2023.

This news involving Disney+ is a part of a new era for Doctor Who — fit with a new logo — that embraces the return of Russell T Davies at the helm, who spearheaded the series’ revival in 2005 when Christopher Eccleston starred as the Doctor.

As Radio Times notes, Doctor Who‘s new logo brings “back the classic ‘diamond’ logo – as seen during Tom Baker’s tenure as the Fourth Doctor in the 1970s.”

In a statement to BBC Studios about the news, Davies said, “I love this show, and this is the best of both worlds – with the vision and joy of the BBC and Disney+ together we can launch the TARDIS all around the planet, reaching a new generation of fans while keeping our traditional home firmly on the BBC in the UK.”

Alisa Bowen, President, Disney+, stated, “We’re excited by the opportunity to bring new seasons of this beloved franchise exclusively to Disney+ and introduce the show to the next generation of audiences in more than 150 markets around the world.”

“The series is a perfect addition to our ever-growing catalog of global content that continues to make Disney+ the home for exceptional storytelling,” Bowen continued.

Doctor Who will be produced in Wales by Bad Wolf with BBC Studios Production.
