Little Demon Season 1 Episode 3 Review: Everybody’s Dying for the Weekend

Reviews

Little Demon Season 1 Episode 3, “Everybody’s Dying for the Weekend,” is a wickedly good time, with a charming all-star voice cast and its brand of sardonic wit on full display.

While Chrissy is the center of Little Demon‘s universe, Laura and Darlene’s dynamic is magnetic, immersing us in their world and leaving Chrissy/Satan in the dust. That’s not to say Chrissy and her father’s story isn’t intriguing, but the show struggles to make her as compelling as her mother and wine mom best friend.

DARLENE: I was saving you “Single White Female” style.

Laura herself is a captivating character. Who is she? How did Laura meet Satan? Where did she get all those tattoos? How did she learn magic? We have many questions about Laura and significantly less about her Antichrist daughter, who should be the show’s focal point. Little Demon fails its crux by shifting the attention to Laura.

That said, it’s always a delight to have more Danny DeVito in any form on our screens, even though it’s difficult to shake off the aura of Frank Reynolds while listening to DeVito speak. He’s so adept at embodying the “deadbeat dad” archetype.

Lucy DeVito holds her own vocally, and her natural, biological bond with DeVito leaps off the screen. Here’s hoping the writers find that perfect balance between these characters and give everyone equal time in the light, especially Chrissy and Satan.

LAURA: You lure innocent Instacart shoppers into your house with candy and cheese plates.

Lennon Parham and Aubrey Plaza carry “Everybody’s Dying for the Weekend,” aptly showcasing Darlene and Laura’s Odd Couple-esque camaraderie. The idea of Darlene not being fazed by Laura’s Wiccan displays and her incessant, bloody torturing of demons is hysterical. She shrugs it off as typical neighbor behavior.

“Everybody’s Dying for the Weekend” delves deeper into these characters and what makes them tick, namely Laura and Chrissy. Darlene confronts Laura in the alternate realm regarding the latter’s refusal to let her guard down. The show brilliantly paints its monstrous imagery as a metaphor for how Laura feels on the inside — she believes she’s undeserving of love and affection because she’s a monster.

Meanwhile, Chrissy struggles to adapt, grappling with her demonic side and newfound abilities. One could compare the terrors of puberty to Chrissy’s dark powers, dubbing them a physical manifestation of the biological and hormonal changes you endure during adolescence. Maybe that’s Little Demon‘s angle — we all feel like outsiders sometimes, strangers in our skin.

SATAN: The realm we’re going to is like Hot Topic but with fornication and genocide.

Overall, this week’s Little Demon episode proves the show is still finding its voice, and despite some unevenness, “Everybody’s Dying for the Weekend” illustrates the show’s potential to soar. We’re starting to love these characters, and its dark humor is undoubtedly a point in its favor.

Stray Observations:

  • You might recognize the voice of the Game Show Host as that of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnold starred alongside Danny DeVito in the 1988 comedy Twins. He’s even dressed like his character from the film.
  • Queen Inichoochiama’s game show resembles the plot of another Arnold gem, The Running Man, wherein his character battles killers for his freedom.
  • If you wanted to see what could’ve transpired between Laura and Everett had Darlene not murdered him with her heel, you’re not alone. We can all be deeply disturbed, twisted little weirdos together.
  • Everyone needs a Darlene as a sidekick. She’s simply the best.
