Dynasty Season 5 Episode 22 Review: Catch 22
Happy endings are had all around on Dynasty Season 5 Episode 22, “Catch 22.”
Final goodbyes are never easy, and that saying couldn’t be more accurate with Dynasty‘s last hoorah.
Dynasty effortlessly works around the revolving storylines at play and takes the time to end them in meaningful ways. It’s a feat the series hasn’t always been able to attain correctly, but the execution is flawless in the finale.

As it turns out, all the awkward hiatuses fans had to put up with ended up working out for the better.
“Catch 22” provides not only reunions and happy endings all-around but also thrills that keep viewers on their toes. Plus, with Amanda’s ex being in town, Culhane hiring a replacement investor, and Liam clearing up his book deal, there’s not a dull moment the entire hour.

One Big Family Reunion
Steven’s return is the biggest plot twist and the highlight of the episode (past two seasons). His reentry into the grander picture is everything the series has needed since his departure in season 2.
Utilizing Steven’s character to remove Adam from the picture is not only genius but the perfect payback. Adam institutionalized Steven and forcibly kept him away from the Carrington family for years, so it’s only fitting that Steven is the one to get the satisfaction of seeing his removal.
Everything about Steven’s return is heart-warming, and the overwhelming feelings are enough to bring forth tears. Primarily during his reunion with Fallon, which provides a nostalgic last performance from Elizabeth Gillies and James Mackay.
I don’t care that Steven’s return only takes place because of fan service. I only wish that his return had happened mid-way through the season versus in the series’ final moments.

Colby Co. Supremacy
Despite Jeff’s Plenexia storyline not being taken advantage of and propelled into something grander before the end of the season, it’s a fitting goodbye. All Jeff wants is to use the technology at his disposal to help the earth and those who inhabit it, which is what he’s now doing.
Colby Co. going global and employing some of the world’s top geniuses to help create miracles is the perfect storyline conclusion for Jeff.
Sam Adegoke’s character is one of the most interesting in the series, and his storyline ending sets up the perfect spin-off opportunity. I don’t know about the rest of the viewers, but I would gladly enjoy a weekly series that revolved around Jeff’s actions toward creating a better life for the less fortunate.

Credit to Kingston
The series makes an intelligent choice by having Liam come clean about his actions in the last few moments of the episode. Liam has always had high morals and stuck true to them, so ending the series with him taking credit for someone else’s work would have been disrespectful.
One of the best parts about this particular situation is how Sam continues to be a consistent voice of reason in Liam’s ear. In the beginning, it’s clear Liam hoped Sam would support him and allow him to slide, but Sam continues to be a true friend and pressure Liam to do the right thing.
Despite the proper wrap-up, Liam deserved a better storyline for Season 5.

“Catch 22” is an all-around spectacular episode that perfectly encapsulates what a series finale should be. It takes the time to give each character enough screen time for a proper goodbye while not focusing on making the entire hour depressing.
Despite the love-hate relationship that I’ve had with the series, it’s a bittersweet goodbye. Dynasty outdoes itself in the finale, going above and beyond to please the fans and give a well-thought-out ending.
Stray Thoughts:
- Fallon changing the name of Fallon Unlimited to Carrington United to reflect everyone is a perfect ending to a series that revolved around the importance of family.
- The fight scene between Adam and Steven is well choreographed and executed flawlessly. Sam Underwood and James Mackay provided an entertaining brawl.
- Steven’s disappearance is one of the most significant plot holes the series has ever had, so it’s relieving to see the series ensure it doesn’t end without wrapping it up.
- While it fits Steven’s character to allow Adam to go on living his life, it feels like a mistake. Adam is a character that inflicted immeasurable amounts of damage on those around him and never felt remorse for most of his actions. He is not deserving of the ending the series provides for him.
Favorite Quotes:

“I would never stop searching. You are everything to me.” – Alexis. - “I want my surrogate to be enveloped by classical music, and I don’t want my baby being into poor sound quality. Now let’s talk video capabilities.” – Fallon.
- “Well, anyone can have a friend. Not everyone can have a Culhane.” – Sam.
