IndieWire reports that when the outlet “asked about their apparent lack of involvement in the project, a Peacock spokesperson responded: “These are the only details we are releasing at this time.”

Additionally, Joel McHale, who played Jeff Winger on all six seasons, tagged both Donald Glover and Yvette Nicole Brown in his tweet celebrating the news.

Brown posted a tweet expressing her excitement about the news, stating, “It’s happening! Congrats, #Community fans! You guys did this!”

Variety shares that the unanswered questions about specifically Yvette Nicole Brown and Donald Glover’s return could mean there is still hope that the pair will “make an appearance — or at least a cameo.”

Deadline reports that “the NBCU digital platform won the rights in a competitive situation.” Community, which debuted in 2009 and takes place at a community college in Colorado, aired its first five seasons on NBC. The sixth and final season found a new home on Yahoo! Screen.

Dan Harmon, who created the series, and Andrew Guest will write and exec produce the Community movie, while McHale, Russ Krasnoff and Gary Foster will executive produce the movie, which comes from Sony Pictures Television and Universal Television.

The news also included an announcement that “Peacock is also acquiring the full series library on a non-exclusive basis.” Community is currently streaming on Hulu, Netflix, and Prime Video.

The Community movie is currently slated for a 2023 release on the streaming service.

NBC Universal Television’s Chairman of Entertainment Susan Rovner spoke about Community‘s fan base in a statement, “‘Six seasons and a movie’ started out as a cheeky line from Communitys early seasons and quickly ignited a passionate fan movement for this iconic, hilarious and cool (cool, cool) NBC comedy.”

“We’re incredibly grateful that 15 years later, we are able to deliver fans this promised movie and can’t wait to get to work with Dan Harmon, Andrew Guest, Joel McHale, Sony, and our partners at UTV to continue this epic comedy for Peacock audiences,” Rovner continued.

TV Line notes that the Community movie’s plot is a secret for now. “The press release only states that Community the Movie derives “from the TV series that predicted its own movie,” making it “the least predictable movie of a TV series that referenced a lot of movies and TV.”

The exciting news comes after a virtual reunion, exclusively reported by Variety, in 2020. Dan Harmon, the Community cast, and Pedro Pascal reunited “for a virtual table read and Q&A, in order to benefit COVID-19 relief efforts.”

Now, after years of campaigning from Community‘s cast and crew to its passionate fans, six seasons and movie is real!
