Only Murders in the Building Season 2 Episode 7 Review: Flipping the Pieces

Only Murders in the Building, Reviews

Our trio is split up on Only Murders in the Building Season 2 Episode 7, “Flipping the Pieces,” which is delightful. As much as I love Charles, Oliver, and Mabel working together, it’s always fun to mix things up every now and then.

While Oliver and Charles are reunited with our favorite detective, Mabel finds out her knight in shining armor is none other than Theo Dimas. To say that’s unexpected is an understatement.

Mabel and Theo teaming up is a bit awkward, considering their shared history, but ultimately they are enjoyable to watch and make a decent team. While there’s still a lot of history preventing them from becoming friends, it’s clear they’ve gotten some closure.

There’s a lot that was revealed during Only Murders in the Building Season 1 that Mabel and Theo need to heal from, and it’s sweet they get the chance to during “Flipping the Pieces.”

Mabel’s got enough other trauma going on, so her soul could use a bit of healing before being forced to focus back on the bad stuff, like Alice’s latest art installation that we saw on Only Murders in the Building Season 2 Episode 6, “Performance Review.”

There’s only so much awfulness that a girl can take before she does actually start stabbing people.

Throughout “Flipping the Pieces,” we’re shown flashbacks to a young Mabel and her father. If we’re being honest, those scenes are boring.

Sure, the end of the episode makes it clear that we’re witnessing the first forgotten memory of Mabel’s, but there are issues with that too. Nothing prompts this realization of forgotten memories; she somehow knows that she does it and knows when the first time was, which is weird.

Mabel: Either the killer is in these files or I’m some unhinged psychopath who goes into fugue states and stabs people. Either way, a girl likes to know these things about herself.

You’d think that if you were purposely suppressing memories that it would take a little bit more than simply recalling that you first did it with your dad’s death.

I expected Mabel to need a trip to a therapist or to undergo hypnosis to put some of the pieces together. The quickness with which Mabel is able to flip the pieces makes it seem as if the memories weren’t pushed down all that deep.

However, I’m not a professional, so perhaps this is how it works sometimes. The brain is a weird little thing. Mabel suddenly realizing that she needs to flip the pieces over is a little too easy.

All that being said, seeing as how Mabel has forgotten two key moments recently — Bunny’s death and the subway attack — it is a relief that the show makes an attempt to explain it and doesn’t have Mabel all of a sudden remember both moments.

Stray Thoughts
  • Oliver and Charles being terrible at discussing the murder weapon quietly brings me such joy.
  • I can’t believe Mabel didn’t try to unmask glitter guy or get a good look at his face!
  • A blackout is the perfect ominous setting for the next episode, and I cannot wait for it.
