Loot Season 1 Episode 9 Review: Cahoga Lake
The first season of Loot has, more than anything, been about finding family and doing good in the world. The billionaire doing charity work is really a catalyst for a found family story — which works quite well.
However, Loot Season 1 Episode 9, “Cahoga Lake,” throws a wrench in some of that, especially for Molly. Molly’s new relationship with Jean-Pierre (the vodka guy) seems to have Molly focus less on her charity work, which starts to create some rifts in her relationships (or at least plant the seeds).
Molly is a billionaire, and that’s not something everyone can relate to. But when Molly gets wrapped up in her new relationship and forgets about her friends, or she thinks she’s going to have a good day at work and has an awful one instead — that’s something the audience can relate to.

In Molly’s case, that just so happens to be filtered through the lens of her being a billionaire. Luckily, the work that Loot has been doing to make Molly relatable is paying off here. Molly doesn’t come off as out-of-touch, but as someone trying to do right that had a bad day.
It’s because viewers have spent 9 episodes caring about these characters that they feel something when Molly doesn’t show up for Nicholas’ play, even though he got a bigger part. Or when she gets whisked away by Jean-Pierre after a sweet moment with Arthur defending her honor.
Even though “Cahoga Lake” is setting up conflict that it doesn’t really need to set up, it’s still filled to the brim with heart and humor.

Nicholas and Howard are the two funniest characters on the show — bar none. The others are funny, but Joel Kim Booster and Ron Funches make for a marvelous odd couple.
They are the driving emotional force behind “Cahoga Lake.” Their feud that lasted a few episodes comes to an end just for Howard to help Nicholas with his play, and realize his own relationship issues in the process.
Howard: There’s some kind of I.T. emergency. What?! They hacked the database?! Probably China again.
Booster’s delivery combined with Funches’ unassuming but impeccable comic timing makes Loot one of the funniest shows around.

But while Nicholas and Howard’s reconciliation will hopefully foreshadow reconciliation between Molly and her team, it also carries the brunt of the emotional weight on “Cahoga Lake.” Their beautiful chemistry brings both the humor and emotion.
Sometimes (and this is one of them), Loot could benefit from its episodes being a tad longer — but luckily each one is made entertaining by the talented ensemble and their strong chemistry.
A few stray thoughts:
- “Presenting the key to the city to YouTube sensation — Jojo Siwa!”
- Arthur and Molly belong together, guys. Jean-Pierre does not see it coming, but it’s coming.
- Loot is great, but it’s no Young Sheldon. “Comedy, drama, that show has it all!”
