Evil Season 3 Episode 9 Review: The Demon of Money
Fans of Grace Ling can rejoice because Evil Season 3 Episode 9, “The Demon of Money” focuses on her directly for the first time since Season 1. We finally get to see her in action enjoying life while also making prophecies about the church’s future and those around her.
Of course, this also means that Leland and Sheryl are holding their breaths in slight fear. After all, you can’t hide anything from Grace — not even a missing husband.
Unfortunately, the reintroduction of Grace into the group adds more questions to the ever-growing pile. With only one episode left this season, we are left wondering if any of these questions will find answers by the end.
An Act of Grace

First and foremost, I can’t start discussing Grace without commenting on the ever-growing number of Priest G-Men. It’s getting to the point where it comes across as a tad bit ridiculous.
Yes, Grace is someone extremely useful to the church and therefore a threat to anyone trying to harm the church. However, it seems a bit excessive to have her protected by four men in priest garb and sunglasses at all times — even when she is with the assessors.
Her prophecies keep coming, but not in the way the church wants them to and so Grace is a lesson to them on giving her freedom and grace. She isn’t able to answer any of their questions on the documents until she is playing in a ball pit with Kristen’s daughters.
All of this ties into the current case they are working on because she somehow just knows which demonic sigil goes with the man they are helping. This shows that for the first time in a while they are actually dealing with something demonic versus something that has an alternate explanation.
She may seem like a demur woman who can’t protect herself, but if the final moments of this episode are anything to go off, Grace can hold her own just fine. I’m not sure the same can be said for the monsignor — may he rest in peace.
I can’t wait to see what kind of showdown is in store between Leland and Grace in the season finale of Evil.
The Continuing Concern for Dr. Boggs

As we all know, Dr. Boggs has now been possessed by a demon in order to successfully write a book. Initially, we thought he was going to be writing a book about his experiences of being possessed.
However, during “The Demon of Money,” Kristen’s daughters get their hands on his manuscript and discover it to be a horror story about a daughter killing her mother (curious if this will come to fruition).
Dr. Boggs calls Kristen hoping to get her insight on the book, but she has somehow missed the concept of reading it in a mirror (since the words and letters are all typed backward). Instead, he gets Lexis on the line and she insists that he continue the story and even gives him suggestions on how he could finish everything.
It’ll be curious to see if this is leading up to Dr. Boggs being a person Kristen has to protect Lexis from — instead of Leland who we’ve been worried about all season. I wouldn’t put it past Leland to have had this plan in his head all along.
He was seeing that direct contact with Lexis hasn’t been working so maybe now he is trying a more indirect approach. Indirect for both Dr. Boggs and Lexis.
What if this book is intended to be used as a power of suggestion tool toward Lexis? The assessor gang did mention the power of suggestion earlier in the episode regarding the money demon they were hunting.
The Money Demon

Once again, the demon the team is hunting turns out to be an actual member of the demon family on the papers that the church possesses. This shows us further proof that sometimes something sinister is actually beyond scientific or mental explanation.
By passing the stock tip from team member to team member, the entity stalking the latest person with that stock can move quickly amongst their ranks. This further proves that science isn’t behind it, nor is mental illness. For once, this situation is controlled by otherworldly force — or demon as David would put it.
It shouldn’t be funny, but Kristen passing the stock tip to her internet troll is actually chuckle-worthy. It’s one of those moments where you say to yourself — yeah, he deserves it.
Furthermore, it’s unfortunate that in two episodes of Evil in a row the person they are assessing ends up dead. Sure, in the previous episode it wasn’t determined yet if the concerning situation was explainable by otherworldly entities or science or psychology.
That doesn’t take away from the fact that the pregnant mother died and this newfound wealthy bank teller kills himself. I’m curious if these losses will begin to weigh on Kristen — as she starts to deal with the other issue at hand, her missing husband.
Ultimately, we still don’t know Leland and Sheryl’s motives for doing what they’ve done to Kristen’s husband. We have theories of course, but no solid proof.
