The Boys Season 3 Episode 8 Review: The Instant White-Hot Wild

Reviews, The Boys

The Boys Season 3 Episode 8, “The Instant White-Hot Wild,” is an underwhelming conclusion to an otherwise impeccable season.

The Boys‘ Season 3 finale is a whirlwind of an hour packed with action, depth, unfortunate deaths, and raw emotion. The episode is astounding – up until the ending. In its final moments is where it doesn’t entirely seal the deal.

The concurrent storyline throughout the season focuses on Butcher’s goal to kill Homelander. Butcher has manipulated his loved ones, broke his morals, and risked everything in pursuit of Homelander’s death.

Butcher deserves another shot at defeating Homelander, just as we deserve to see an epic conclusion to the Homelander-Butcher-Solider Boy dynamic. Instead, the series completely runs the train off the metaphorical track by throwing Ryan in the mix, ensuing chaos, and things go astray quickly.

Ryan is that one weak spot that Butcher will never be able to get rid of. Butcher’s loyalty to Ryan is unwavering, even after purposefully hurting Ryan’s feelings at the beginning of the season.

However, Butcher is unaware of just how severely he’s cut himself off from Ryan until the end when Ryan chooses Homelander adamantly.

Ryan is a child with superpowers – he will make deadly mistakes without ever intending to. His powers will inevitably overcome him at times when fueled by vast amounts of emotion. And that’s what Ryan needs to hear, but Homelander beats Butcher to it.

Butcher’s unexpected team-up with Homelander might be Ryan’s saving grace – and provide one of the wickedest shots of the season – but it doesn’t make up for the lack of fighting between Butcher/Homelander.

Veering the final battle in a different direction allows open possibilities for Season 4 of The Boys, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best decision as a whole.

The infamous Homelander x Butcher battle to the death is a highly anticipated event; I expect to see it in Season 4.

One other minor issue with “The Instant White-Hot Wild” is Black Noir’s death. A sense of emotional connection has been built between Noir and the audience through his distressing backstory given this season.

The issue isn’t that Homelander is the one to kill Noir, but rather the fact that Noir has no opportunity to defend himself. Noir may not have access to the total capacity of his brain usage, but he’s aware of social cues.

It makes no sense for him not to be on guard after Homelander reveals Soldier Boy is his father. His death is entirely too rushed and doesn’t fit the character dynamic.

Besides deviously changing the narrative at the last second and killing Noir, the episode is glorious.

All the fight scenes are executed with intensity, gore-galore, and a dash of whimsy – how we like The Boys to be.

Plus, as I stated before – and no matter how much I dislike the team-up – Homelander and Butcher using their heat vision simultaneously is one of the most aesthetically pleasing shots of the season – hands down.

Maeve getting the ending she deserves – an everyday life with Elena far away from all the supe BS – instead of dying is one of, if not the, best moment of the finale. She’s been on the frontlines dealing with Homelander’s repulsive and maniacal behavior for years. It’s time she gets a break.

It’s a blessing that she’s allowed to walk away from Vought.

The Boys Season 4 is bound to be even more unhinged and chaotic than Season 3 as Butcher works to prevent Ryan from becoming the next Homelander.

Stray Thoughts:

  • Annie’s levitation abilities are just the tip of the iceberg – we haven’t seen the extent of her powers yet, but it looks like we’ll get to in Season 4!
  • Butcher’s 12–18-month cancer diagnosis puts a heavy time crunch on his ability to win Ryan over and take out Neuman before she can become the official VP.
  • Kimiko always gets the best fight scenes, which are always mesmerizing and unforgettable, and that’s how it should be.
