Loot Season 1 Episode 4 Review: Excitement Park

Loot, Reviews

Loot is starting to dive deeper into each of its characters, making for a more well-rounded ensemble.

On Loot Season 1 Episode 4, “Excitement Park,” Arthur helps Molly sort through some of the companies that she owns that may or may not be problematic. He ends up accompanying her to visit several of them, and they spend the day together.

Arthur and Molly seem very different at first glance. But other than the fact that she’s obscenely rich and he’s a lowly finance guy at her foundation, they have quite a bit in common.

Maya Rudolph and Joel Kim Booster on Loot Season 1 Episode 4, “Excitement Park”

They’re both starting over after a divorce, and they seem to have a similar sense of humor. Not only that – but Nat Faxon and Maya Rudolph have clear and obvious chemistry.

They seamlessly exert that chemistry in each of their scenes. It’s mostly platonic things happening, of course, but they clearly enjoy one another’s company. Beyond that, it’s easy to root for them because they’re both going through divorce and have had their lives upended.

Faxon and Rudolph aren’t doing anything especially innovative or clever here – they’re just being true to their characters. These characters just happen to be from very different backgrounds, but find themselves in the same situation.

Ron Funches and Maya Rudolph on Loot Season 1 Episode 4, “Excitement Park”

Essentially, that’s the main takeaway from “Excitement Park” — that Arthur and Molly belong together. Let’s get this ship sailing!

It’s no surprise that Loot poured some cold water on Arthur and Molly before the episode ends. It’s early in the series and these two characters are still very different. But the long-term potential is clear.

Beyond the main story, it’s a bit of a surprise that Nicholas and Howard spend their second straight week in a plot together. My expectation would have been to see them mix it up after these two characters spent the bulk of the previous episode together.

But ultimately it matters not — because Howard and Nicholas are the two funniest characters on the show. Ron Funches and Joel Kim Booster should be in every scene together. I very much want to see Nicholas tackle the role of “Lucas Takahashi”

Loot is nowhere near a perfect show. But four episodes in, there is an awful lot to like. The cast has fantastic chemistry with one another, and they’re all extremely likable.

Loot, with enough time to completely figure itself out, has the potential to be a feel-good summer hit. The pieces are all there.

A few stray thoughts:
  • Anyone else want to take a field trip to visit Excitement Park? Just me?
  • “That is some truly sick rich person s**t.” Sofia is an underrated character.
  • When the paparazzi photos of Arthur and Molly poked a whole in their balloon, it was DEVASTATING. They belong together.
  • Adam Scott needs to return, right? We need some more billionaire shenanigans, ASAP.
  • Nicholas’ Axe commercial is absolutely hysterical.
