With the conclusion of this series, Irma Vep Season 1 Episode 8, “The Terrible Wedding,” gives us a whole lot to think about. Almost too much, if you ask me.

The series finale finds the show wrapping filming completely and seeing Mira off into her future. She gets an offer to star in what is sure to be an award-winning movie, and she bonds with Rene as she says goodbye to her beloved character, Irma Vep.

But there’s so much going on that seems unnecessary. Even after thinking it over and watching the episode twice, I’m not sure what the purpose of much of it is.

First of all, we have the cameo by Kristen Stewart at the start of the episode. it almost feels like she’s going to be important in the whole Mira/Eamonn storyline, but then she’s gone as quickly as she came. And that storyline is just… over?

There’s also the scene where the film students discuss Rene as a director and Mira as a reincarnated Irma Vep. The opinions they discuss may be there to show us that the series isn’t meant to be a success, but don’t we already sort of know that given the past seven episodes?

We’ve also repeatedly had characters who were given a strong start with no conclusion at all. Sure, Mira is the central character, and her story seems more or less polished by the end. But is that really it?

What about Zoe? Or Regina? When Mira tells Zoe she isn’t sure she’s attracted to women (despite sleeping with multiple women throughout this series), is there a point to that conversation?

Even Rene, who proves by far to be the most sympathetic character on the show despite not being all that great as a human being, finishes the series talking about how he’s doing much better now. But is that true?

I’ll be honest, I’m left scratching my head a bit here. There is so much to like about Irma Vep, but not enough to love. Especially as someone who romanticizes the art of filmmaking, I just wanted to feel something more.

Look, not every show is going to wrap up each story in a neat little bow. But some of these characters deserved more. It doesn’t sit right with me that Zoe, Regina, and Laurie were all reduced to potential love interests only to have Mira deny that she’s attracted to women at all.

For a series full of sapphic characters, dramatic plotlines, and such a realistic peek into the world of filmmaking, this really should have been the perfect series. I can’t even say it fell apart at the end, because I’m not all that sure it was ever put together in the first place.

Chekhov’s gun never did go off. It’s a sad way to say goodbye to a series.
