All Rise Season 3 Episode 6 Review: I’ll Be There

All Rise, Reviews

We might expect All Rise Season 3 Episode 6, “I’ll Be There” to be all about the fallout from Luke and Mark’s post-trial division and the appearance of Lola’s ex, Andre. This turns out to be only partially true.

Much of Lola’s storyline is indeed dedicated to her complicated feelings about the man who once broke her heart and who is now dating her friend Rachel. Yet with advice from friends and family, that turmoil seems largely resolved within the hour.

Overall, it’s a decision I’m happy with. Lola has enough to deal with in her professional life. With a loving husband and new baby girl, her home life offers happiness and stability. It’s important too for audience to see this functional marriage onscreen.

Yet I did only say that it “seems” largely resolved. Even as Lola deletes a last, suggestive text from Dre, we already know we’ll be seeing more of him while his career brings him into the courts of Los Angeles. This suggests a new and troubling angle.

At this point, even though Lola’s feelings still exist, I think she’s set aside her temptation. The possibility that this man is nevertheless determined to pursue her could bring a new host of troubles. And what of Rachel? Though she’s mentioned, we don’t see her in this hour.

The tensions between Mark and Luke are also only present in name. Though Luke tells Emily his concerns about their friendship, the two are patching things up (or at least agreeing not to talk about them) the first time they meet face to face.

It’s another resolution that comes about more quickly that it probably would in real life. Still, I completely believe Mark and Luke being the kinds of people who want to brush things under the rug as soon as possible. I’m just happy they’re friends again.

The one omission that feels really glaring is that the case that created this mess is only mentioned in passing. Considering it involves a serial killer now walking free, that’s something that should come up. I’m certain it still will, but it just feels strange to let it slide for now.

Thankfully, the new stories we get in the episode are much more rewarding. Emily takes on what may well be her most consequential battle yet in the case of Randall, who was convicted on the false testimony of a man who actually committed murder.

Our faith is Emily is stalwart, but the trial is an uphill battle to test her nerves and ours. The key witness dies. Another refuses to come forward to protect her own reputation. A third can’t be found. When the stakes are this high, these are crushing blows.

The day is saved by tracking down that last witness moments before Randall accepts a deal and falsely admits guilt. It is very much a hail mary, but it also comes down to the Emily’s relentless determination and hard work. This one is a big win.

We finish up at our favorite private firm as Amy and Ness fight to protect a young woman’s inheritance. Wills and family business are already messy, but the extended relations here take it to a new level. Ness is thrown temporarily for a loop, but lands right back on her feet.

Though her failing the bar is yet another thing left unsaid, it sure is good to see her back and proving she knows what she’s doing, exam or no exam. There’s also a great moment in which Amy pulls an completely unwitting Mark in as the lawman ready to take down lying in-laws.

Thanks to some powerful plotlines and complex drama, this isn’t a filler episode, but it does feel a bit like a placeholder. We know we’ll be hearing more about Carl Brewer’s crimes, Andre’s romantic intentions, and more. The only question is when that will happen.
