Welcome to a new week and another round of What to Watch on TV for the week of June 5th! We’ll be sharing our picks for what to watch this week, from marathons to big guest spots, and significant episodes of TV to look forward to.

This week’s picks include All Rise’s resurrection, Ms. Marvel’s silver screen debut, First Kill sinks its teeth into Netflix, and more.

Here are our recommendations for what to watch on TV this week:

Irma Vep – Monday, June 6

Irma Vep – Alicia Vikander – HBO

Based on the 90s film of the same name, this series presents an extended look at the story. The literary series, headed up by writer Olivier Assayas, follows a movie star that’s become jaded by her career and personal life and takes on the starring role in a remake of a French silent film. Starring Alicia Vikander, Irma Vep makes its reintroduction Monday, June 6 at 9/8c on HBO.

Series Description: Mira (Alicia Vikander) is an American movie star disillusioned by her career and a recent breakup, who comes to France to star as “Irma Vep” in a remake of the French silent film classic, “Les Vampires.” Set against the backdrop of a lurid crime thriller, Mira struggles as the distinctions between herself and the character she plays begin to blur and merge. IRMA VEP reveals to us the uncertain ground that lies at the border of fiction and reality, artifice and authenticity, art and life.

All Rise – Tuesday, June 7

After being summarily dismissed by CBS, the legal drama found new life on OWN. The third season picks things up six months after the events of All Rise Season 2 Episode 17, “Yeet,” as viewers get to see many familiar L.A. County Courthouse characters return. All Rise returns Tuesday, June 7 at 8/7c on OWN.

The Janes – Wednesday, June 8

HBO’s latest documentary acquisition, and Sundance 2022 Selection, covers a topic that unfortunately has been perpetually up for debate for decades. The Janes documents the origin and inner workings of an underground network of women that went by the name “Jane” as they helped other women secure reproductive healthcare, and keep their bodily autonomy, through abortions. The Janes makes its cable debut on Wednesday, June 8 at 9/8c on HBO, available to stream the next day on HBO Max.

Documentary Description: In the spring of 1972, police raided an apartment on the South Side of Chicago where seven women who were part of a clandestine network were arrested. Using code names, fronts, and safe houses to protect themselves and their work, the accused had built an underground network for women seeking safe, affordable, illegal abortions. They called themselves “Jane.”

Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey – Wednesday, June 8

The latest Netflix documentary gives viewers a deeper look and insight into the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and their leader, Warren Jeffs’, rise to prominence in the polygamous sect. Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey drops Wednesday, June 8 on Netflix.

Documentary Description: In 2008, a dramatic raid at the Yearning for Zion Ranch in West Texas generated attention around the world, as law enforcement agents uncovered stunning evidence of sexual, physical and psychological abuse and took 400+ children into custody. Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey, directed by Emmy and Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Rachel Dretzin, gives viewers an in-depth look into the secretive polygamous sect of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) and the rise of self-professed prophet Warren Jeffs. The four-part documentary series features never-before-seen archival footage and harrowing personal stories from some of the courageous women and men who escaped. From forced underage marriage and pregnancy to a complete unraveling into an oppressive criminal cult under Warren Jeffs’ rule, the story uncovers extraordinary bravery battling tyrannical control in modern America.

Ms. Marvel – Wednesday, June 8

Rejoice, Ms. Marvel fans! It’s (finally) time to see the teenage superhero take to the silver screen! Iman Vellani takes on the role of everyone’s favorite nerdy superhero. The series follows Kamala Khan, a Muslim American teen whose life takes a wild turn as she finds herself living with the superpowers she’s always read about. Ms. Marvel debuts Wednesday, June 8 on Disney+.

Season Description: Marvel Studios’ “Ms. Marvel” is a new, original series that introduces Kamala Khan, a Muslim American teenager growing up in Jersey City. An avid gamer and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, Kamala is a Super Hero mega fan with an oversized imagination—particularly when it comes to Captain Marvel. Yet Kamala feels like she doesn’t fit in at school and sometimes even at home—that is, until she gets superpowers like the heroes she’s always looked up to. Life gets better with superpowers, right?

Queer as Folk – Thursday, June 9

The critically acclaimed series is back with this reimagining centered around a group of friends living in New Orleans. In the aftermath of a devastating tragedy, everyone makes drastic life changes. Queer As Folk makes its reimagined debut Thursday, June 9 on Peacock.

Series Description: QUEER AS FOLK is a vibrant reimagining of the groundbreaking British series created by Russell T. Davies, exploring a diverse group of friends in New Orleans whose lives are transformed in the aftermath of a tragedy.

Fairfax – Friday, June 10

It’s another year for this group of middle school friends as they continue to strive for middle school prominence. Fairfax returns Friday, June 10 on Prime Video.

Series Description: The gang-gang is back for more fun in Season Two of this irreverent animated comedy following the misadventures of four middle schoolers looking to earn their place in the culture. It’s a modern look at the timeless struggle to fit in and stand out, hold on to your ride-or-die crew, and kiss your first crush – who may or may not be A.I.  The series is created and executive produced by Matthew Hausfater, Aaron Buchsbaum, and Teddy Riley. Additional executive producers include Jon Zimelis and Jason U. Nadler for Serious Business (@midnight); Peter A. Knight (Bojack Horseman); and Chris Prynoski, Ben Kalina, and Antonio Canobbio for Titmouse (Big Mouth). The artist Somehoodlum, who designed the characters for the series, serves as a consulting producer alongside the pop/internet culture clothing and media brand Pizzaslime.

For All Mankind – Friday, June 10

The critically acclaimed NASA drama returns and picks up over two decades after the moon landing as the next mission is set and the space race continues with a new endpoint: Mars. For All Mankind returns Friday, June 10 on AppleTV+.

First Kill – Friday, June 10

Netflix’s latest genre fare has everything you could need or want in a vampire drama: a vampire coming into her own and being tasked with completing her first kill, a vampire hunter new in town and who finds out the girl she is drawn to is a vampire, a forbidden romance, and potentially plenty of action and angst. Viewers can sink their teeth into First Kill on Friday, June 10 on Netflix.

Series Description: When it’s time for teenage vampire Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook) to make her first kill so she can take her place among a powerful vampire family, she sets her sights on a new girl in town named Calliope (Imani Lewis). But much to Juliette’s surprise, Calliope is a vampire hunter from a family of celebrated slayers. Both find that the other won’t be so easy to kill and, unfortunately, way too easy to fall for.
