‘Percy Jackson and The Olympians’ Announces New Castings, Including Jason Mantzoukas and Megan Mullally

News, Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Percy Jackson and The Olympians kicks off its first day of production in Vancouver with one epic casting announcement!

The Disney+ TV series is ready to introduce us to the adults who will be helming the small-screen adaptation of Rick Riordan’s middle-grade mythology series.

The official casting announcement, first reported by Variety, includes five new additions to the cast, with Virginia Kull, Glynn Turman, Jason Mantzoukas, Megan Mullally, and Timm Sharp set to appear in recurring guest star roles.

Percy Jackson will be introducing not one but two NBC sitcom slate icons into its live-action adaptation.

Jason Mantzoukas, known for playing outrageously unhinged characters on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Good Place, is officially stepping into the role of Dionysus.

Mr. D is described as “irritable and sarcastic.” He also runs Camp Half Blood, a camp for the demigods. Yes, the god of wine, ecstasy, and insanity is in charge of children, and he will be portrayed by Mantzoukas. Perfect castings do indeed exist!

Fans can look forward to watching Mr. D square off against Walker Scobell’s Percy Jackson. That actor pairing is sure to provoke plenty of great bantering.

As will the addition of Megan Mullally. Comedy royalty, the actress has a knack for playing wickedly funny characters on Will & Grace and Parks and Recreation. She is set to play Alecto, a.k.a. Mrs. Dodds.

A strict math teacher, Mrs. Dodds can be “monstrous at times” because she is a monster. As one of the three Furies, Alecto loyally serves the god of the underworld. It’s safe to say Mullally will bring some killer acting chops to the role!

Virginia Kull from Big Little Lies and NOS4A2, will play Percy’s kind-hearted and protective mother, Sally Jackson. Sally always knew her affair with Poseidon meant that the dangerous world of Greek gods would come for her son one day.

Enter Gabe Ugliano, played by On the Verge‘s Timm Sharp. He’s described as “Sally’s selfish, brash, and combative husband as well as Percy’s stepfather,” but fans of the book know how vile and wretched this father figure can be.

Rounding out this impeccable casting, The Wire‘s Glynn Turman will play Percy’s trusted guide Chiron, a.k.a Mr. Brunner. Disguised as the demigod’s wise Latin teacher, Chiron is secretly mythology’s famed centaur and trainer of heroes.

With this series nailing every casting thus far, the gods undoubtedly have something spectacular in store for the next reveal.
