Duncanville Review: Throw Momma From the Brain (Season 3 Episode 6)

Duncanville, Reviews

Duncan sees a therapist for all the wrong reasons, and it’s dick-joke-galore on Duncanville Season 3 Episode 6, “Throw Momma From the Brain.”

There are some things everyone on the planet never wants to see: fresh vomit on the sidewalk on a hot day, Dark Phoenix (2019) dir. Simon Kinberg, and your mother fully naked.

Duncan tries to scrub his brain off that pesky #3 and makes a mistake even he isn’t prepared for.

The joke is funny the first time, even the second time, maybe the third.

Making an entire rap about having “big deck energy” is funny at first, but the longer it goes, the more time is spent looking around and wondering when it will end.

Sneaking into the neighbor’s house — the weird neighbor’s house — to use their pool is good as it gets. There doesn’t need to be joke after joke after joke.

“Something something” beating “something something” dead horses.

Why Isn’t Real Therapy Like This?

After seeing his mother naked, Duncan goes to a psychologist to have his memories of the night removed. And he succeeds! Only to make his mother cry.

Imagine seeing your mother naked and then making her cry? Daaaamn, Duncan. Way harsh.

Luckily, Duncanville keeps its sweet spot on an episode that tries too hard by reminding us that memories with our loved ones mean more than any embarrassing, weird story out there.

The show always finds clever ways to include Duncan’s friends, and they mesh together so well on “Throw Momma From the Brain,” that it’s hardly noticeable that they’re not physically there.

Helen? The phone’s for You. It’s the Retirement Home.

Kathy Najimy is an absolute delight as Helen, but the weird Duncan jokes are just that — weird.

We could laugh at it if Duncan weren’t a teenager, but he is, and Helen is just creepy. On the other hand, there’s no reason Helen can’t find a sudden interest in Jack. So let’s go down that route instead.

Or we could make Helen interested in Annie! There’s no reason we can’t have an older, lovable lesbian on this show. I even welcome it with open arms.

Now that I’m saying it, I’m begging Duncanville to give us a complex queer character. Other than Bex, we all know that girl is gay.

Stray Thoughts:
  • Duncanville turning “Parasite-ing” into a thing will be the best thing to happen to comedic television in a long, long time.
  • I would like to steal Kimberly’s bathing suit and wear it all summer, please.
  • The subtle knowledge that Jack knows, understands, and communicates with raccoons is one of my favorite things we’ve learned about Jack thus far.
  • I want Mr. Mitch around always.
