Station 19 Review: When the Party’s Over (Season 5 Episode 15)

Reviews, Station 19

Station 19 Season 5 Episode 15, “When the Party’s Over,” is a harrowing depiction of the aftermath of when Jeremy assaulted Andy.

Furthermore, it serves as an evergreen reminder to believe women.

This episode starts with a content warning and ends with a hotline to call if you or someone you know is a victim of sexual assault. Both are critical bookends for an episode that carefully deals with such heavy subject matter.

Please be aware that this review will examine the episode’s details, and it may be triggering for some to read.

STATION 19 – “When the Party’s Over” – (ABC/Liliane Lathan) JASON GEORGE

The script for “When the Party’s Over” is tight and informative. It walks us through the purpose and process of a physical evidence recovery kit (PERK) alongside Andy.

Hearing Andy repeatedly give her consent during that process is powerful. Hearing it over a montage of Andy learning life-saving self-defense is powerful.

This episode never loses sight of Andy, even when Jeremy’s life hangs in the balance. “When the Party’s Over” is on her side from start to finish, even when law enforcement isn’t as explicit about their stance.

Andy’s conversations with the police officers — and later the detectives — quickly become interrogations as they turn the tables on Andy.

Their line of questioning is an essential step in the investigative process, but their tactics are infuriating ways to delegitimize the severity of the assault.

Ben Warren even publicly voices his complaints about the efficacy of the police officers’ process.

Carina echoes the general frustrations with the legal system after she and Grey’s Anatomy‘s Taryn Helm administer the PERK.

Station 19 finds organic and in-character ways to hold a mirror up to our corrupt society that demonizes women for what they wear, how much they drink, or why they did or didn’t fight back.

In the process, this episode reveals more about the characters we know and love. We learn more about Jack and Carina’s traumatic pasts in an incredibly vulnerable scene.

The level of vulnerability it takes to share such details of one’s past speaks to Jack and Carina’s growing friendship and trust in each other.

Additionally, Andy gains a new perspective on some formative memories of her mother, Elena. There is so much that stands out in those flashbacks.

Minutes into the episode, Elena states that she will not accept anyone telling her daughter that a boy who is aggressive towards her is just a boy with a crush.

That sentiment isn’t expressed enough on TV, especially to a younger person — a younger woman.

That stereotype needs to go far, far away, and maybe Station 19 can help by debunking its romanticized perception.

Instead, it can continue the work to show it as a toxic step that could encourage boys to grow up and become men who assault women.

Jaina Lee Ortiz’s performance during “When the Party’s Over” is nothing short of chilling and spectacular.

Andy’s entire presence feels like a live wire that reaches out through the TV screen.

This episode is a difficult watch for many reasons, and Ortiz’s performance is one of them because of the reality she injects into this well-written story.

Though, on a grand scale for the series, it’s challenging to reckon with this trauma happening to Andy after it feels like this show keeps dropping more and more onto her shoulders.

Every time it seems like she finally gets her head above water, something else dares to pull her into the deep end.

It’s evident that Andy is a fighter, a survivor, so it’s easy to hope that she will make it through this challenging time.

But, that doesn’t erase the desire to see Andy tread the water for a little longer than a few episodes in the future.

The fallout of Jeremy’s death will take time, so it’s more than likely that Station 19 will take Andy into the depths of this case and the valid emotions that will arise.

That narrative direction likely means the legal system will put the legitimacy of Andy’s experience and perspective under a larger microscope.

That level of attention will make it more challenging for Andy to cope with this trauma due to the interference of the press and the public.

Because of what’s surely to come, it’s comforting that Station 19 takes the time to remind Andy (and us) that 19 are more than co-workers. They’re a family, and they’ll always show up for each other.

The image of the team coming into Andy’s room just to be with her is one of the most touching sequences Station 19 has ever done.

It calls back to a similar scene when the team shows up for Vic after Lucas Ripley passed away on Station 19 Season 2 Episode 15, “Always Ready.”

One of the best things about this scene is even though the camera is in the room with them, this moment feels private. It feels personal and theirs.

There’s another one like this earlier in the episode when Robert tells Andy that Jeremy died. For the most part, the camera stays outside the room — on the other side of the glass.

The music lets some of Robert’s dialogue cut through, but most of the scene is a private moment between Andy and Robert (and Jack) before the detectives question her.

That direction is intentional and adds more levels to the storytelling. It feels like a conscious way to give Andy some privacy after the attack.

“When the Party’s Over” is a lot — to say the least. But, it shows how impactful storytelling can be on the small screen.

People can often overlook TV as a lesser medium than film, but it can’t be if it can pull off important narratives like this one.

Station 19‘s Season 6 renewal means it doesn’t need to put a quickly tied bow on Andy’s story and her recovery. Instead, it can follow her as closely as possible and give this story the care and respect it deserves.

This episode may open someone’s eyes to the imbalance in the justice system, the double standards women face, the need for self-defense, the damaging narratives we can grow up with, and the importance of family — found or otherwise — through it all.

That matters. TV matters. Storytelling matters.

Stray Thoughts
  • The relief on Carina’s face during the group hug with Maya and Jack is so lovely.
  • Travis and Theo coming up with ship names that are entirely off-base is hilarious.
  • Beckett is decent for ten seconds, and then he takes ten steps back.
  • It is nice to see Grey’s Anatomy‘s Teddy Altman on the show!

  • Weird that a site like TellTale doesn’t have more to comment on the problematic tropes being perpetuated by the Jack Carina Maya baby storylin.
