Legends of Tomorrow Review: Knocked Down, Knocked Up (Season 7 Episode 13)

Legends of Tomorrow, Reviews

The team attempts to save Gwyn from a fixed point and turn Gideon back to the good side on Legends of Tomorrow Season 7 Episode 13, “Knocked Down, Knocked Up.”

It’s hard to know how to feel about this finale because it’s not clear just yet where this leaves us. If this is an end to the series, then it’s pretty lackluster, despite the previous episodes having all of the tell-tale signs of a penultimate episode. However, if this is a season finale, then it’s merely fine.

That’s a distinction that we aren’t going to be able to make until we know the ultimate fate of the series going forward and that ambiguity does color our enjoyment of it. Is this the last that we will ever see of this show and these characters?

There is a lot here that would be enticing for us going forward, if nothing else. That really boils down to two things. The first is the realization that Sara has — cue handwaving — created a gay lovechild with Ava. It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t make any sense; it is still delightful.

There’s something special out of not making Sara or Ava compromise in terms of who biologically makes up their baby. This is a child that will be equally both of them, automatically giving them equal footing and partnership in that pregnancy that they otherwise would have had to fight for.

The second thing, and is the one that almost makes the episode, is the inclusion of Mike AKA Booster Gold (played by Donald Faison). Legends of Tomorrow has always been really successful at introducing characters into their world and having them fit almost instantly, like when Flannel Zari or Constantine came aboard.

Booster Gold is a character that fans have wanted to come onto the Waverider for seasons and now that he’s here it’s practically perfect. Immediately, Donald Faison understands the assignment and the vibe and is in it as smoothly as slipping on a glove.

Everything from the goofy disposition that borders on slimy to the blue and gold color aesthetic is pitch-perfect for this character. It is a fantastic opening for him and if the episode is successful at nothing else, it makes us want more of him for a hypothetical next season.

Also worth noting is the departure of Nate from the season, who will not be coming back. After Mick left, he was the oldest remaining Legend outside of Sara and while we didn’t always appreciate his character to the fullest extent, his absence is still definitely going to be felt on the show if it comes back.

We pray to any deity out there that this isn’t the end, though. It’s rare for a show to have lasted as long as this one has and still feel like there’s a good amount left in the tank. The show has left us in a similar place to the end of the second season with what is very similar to the Time Bureau.

That parallel makes for an intriguing jumping-off point for the series to continue on.
