Top 5 Reasons to Watch ‘Naomi’ on The CW
When Arrow decided to wrap things up after eight seasons, Black Lightning and Supergirl followed suit quickly. It was enough to make the fans wonder if the superhero television series was on the decline. Fortunately, that idea was far from the truth.
With Stargirl, fans were reintroduced to the JSA and the Injustice Society, happily teetering the line between old-school comic readers and rookies alike. But Naomi takes a completely different approach.
Naomi introduces us to a whole new brand of hero, and one not well-known in any respect. A character so new to the DC universe that her name alone brings up thousands of questions.

The moment the pilot was announced comic enthusiasts scoured the internet for any tidbits of information they could find on Naomi McDuffie and her origin story. Truth be told, there wasn’t much to discover.
To some fans, this may have come off as disappointing. With so many classic superheroes, why choose one that is relatively unknown?
For starters, it means there are no issues with a character being different from the pages of the comic book. Lifelong devotees won’t be able to complain about the writers messing up a popular story arc. This character is still finding her footing in the DC universe, and it looks like this show just may help her find the way.

This is just one reason why Naomi is so exciting to watch. Nobody knows where we are headed, and the possibilities are endless.
Are her friends’ superheroes in disguise? What is her connection to Superman? Which character will ultimately be her love interest?
These are all valid questions in and of themselves, but they are just the tip of the iceberg. And if they aren’t enough to spark your interest in Naomi McDuffie, then pull up a chair and read on for the top five reasons to watch Naomi:
1. Diversity

Barely ten minutes into the first episode, anyone can see that this show is committed to diversity. A young Black girl adopted by a biracial couple is just the beginning. We also have her best friend, Lourdes, who is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community.
Port Oswego seems to be a melting pot of culture with room for everybody at the table. Characters from every walk of life have found a home here and at least a piece of the American dream. It is quite unlikely fans won’t find someone they can latch onto.
Mixing in a large undercover species of aliens, things could heat up rather quickly for Naomi and her friends. Their varied personalities could very well be what gets them all out alive.
2. Acceptance

To go along with the theme of diversity, there is also a lot of acceptance.
Oftentimes in real life, differences can cause animosity. Skin color, contrasts in sexuality, and even gender influences can cause people to lash out at each other, bringing forth the worst in all of us.
Naomi and her friends see past the problems these situations can create and instead choose to recognize the person’s strengths. They band together as a team using each other’s skillsets to solve equations that come their way.
When Naomi needs to get back an ancient artifact from Zumbado, each of her friends plays their part in breaking into his car dealership to uncover the stolen relic. While the venture proves to be fruitless, they all do what they can to keep everyone out of danger.
3. Mystery

As mentioned before, Naomi is a newer character to the DC universe. Her origins are not clear to the audience, or even herself. It is fun to solve this mystery alongside the titular hero in real-time.
Each episode gives us small glimpses into where Naomi is from and how she got to Earth in the first place. Nobody seems to fully understand the complete story, but several characters know just enough to share.
Dee and Zumbado seem to have the most insight into Naomi, but neither of them is ready to spell it out for her. They would rather she discover her true self along the way.
4. Arrowverse

Being a superhero show on The CW means there is a decent chance of being counted as part of the Arrowverse. While Naomi proves to have some connection to the universe, it is unclear to what extent.
Naomi puts herself out there as a Superman stan having a blog dedicated to the Kryptonian and all his adventures, but up until recently, he was believed to be a fictional superhero.
A throwdown involving the Big Blue Boy Scout in the center of town has blown everyone’s minds making them doubt everything they know to be real.
We all know that Superman exists in the Arrowverse, but without a clear view of the Last Son of Krypton, it is hard to say whether or not it is the same character. The writers could be pulling the wool over our eyes, hoping to reveal that this is an alternate world in the multiverse until a more convenient time.
5. Family Dynamics

Although Naomi was a baby alien found in the forest, her parents never gave a second thought to adopting her. They knew they could raise her as their own flesh and bone, giving her the proper upbringing she needed. Their quest to give Naomi the most normal life they can has been a true labor of love.
As she has grown into a teenager, Naomi has discovered many different things about herself — including the fact she has superpowers. Yet these changes have never made Greg or Jen think any differently about their daughter.
They trust their daughter to make her own decisions and to be responsible for herself.
It’s refreshing to see a family that cares so deeply for their child and still lets her live a life of her own. They know she will make mistakes along the way, and they are there to guide her back to the proper path if needed.
Furthermore, Naomi’s friends are an extension of her family, accepting her during this chaotic adventure she has been thrust into. Not at any point have they decided to sit this thing out until things calm down.
Every single one of them is here with love and respect for who Naomi is and who she is becoming.
