
What to Watch on TV: Women of the Movement, This is Us, Nancy Drew
Welcome to a new week and another round of What to Watch on TV for the week of January 2nd! We’ll be sharing our picks for what to watch this week, from marathons to big guest spots, and significant episodes of TV to look forward to.
This week’s picks include the premiere of The Women of the Movement, the return of Nancy Drew, the final season of This is Us, and more.

Around the World in 80 Days – Sunday, January 2

Take a trip around the world with David Tennent, who stars in PBS’s adaptation of the Jules Vern classic, Around the World in 80 Days. Episode 1 kicks off this eight-part limited series with Phileas Fogg, played by Tennent, setting out to prove that he can circle the earth in a hot air balloon in just 80 days. Joining him on this adventure are Jean Passepartout, played by Ibrahim Koma, and journalist Abigal “Fix” Fortescue, played by Leonie Banesche. Around the World in 80 Days premieres Sunday, January 2 at 8/7c on PBS.
Episode Description: Phileas Fogg bets a fortune that he can circle the Earth in no more than 80 days.
The Cleaning Lady – Monday, January 3

Elodie Yung stars in Fox’s newest crime drama. Yung plays Thony De La Rosa, a doctor in the Philippines who is now working as a cleaning lady after coming to the US to seek medical treatment for her son. On the Season 1 premiere, Thony witnesses a murder that completely upends her life once again. The Cleaning Lady premieres Monday, January 3 at 9/8c on Fox.
Episode Description: Thony (Elodie Yung), a whip-smart Cambodian doctor, struggles to make ends meet as an undocumented worker after coming to the U.S. from the Philippines in search of a medical treatment for her ailing son. After witnessing a murder, Thony cleans the crime scene to stay alive, then begins living a double life, cleaning for a crime syndicate while doing what is necessary to save her son.
Abbot Elementary – Tuesday, January 4

After her win on Abbot Elementary Season 1 Episode 1, “Pilot,” Janine’s latest attempt to fix her school’s problems may end up making things worse. Abbott Elementary returns Tuesday, January 4 at 9/8c on ABC.
Episode Description: Going against everyone’s advice, Janine takes it upon herself to fix every problem herself when she notices a flicking light bulb in the hallway. Despite the best intentions, Janine ends up causing new issues throughout the school. Elsewhere, Gregory asks Barbara for help talking to a parent, which leads him to spend his lunch period in an unexpected way.
black-ish – Tuesdays, January 4

The eighth and final season of black-ish gets started with a pretty famous name joining them. Former first lady, Michelle Obama, guest stars as the long-running series begins its final bow. black-ish’s Season 8 premieres Tuesday, January 4 at 9:30/8:30c on ABC.
Episode Description: Bow convinces Dre to attend a fundraising event for When We All Vote in hopes to make some new couple friends (and to do their part in increasing participation in each and every election), but Dre is convinced there will be nothing but dud husbands there to befriend. Their expectations are far exceeded when the special guest for the evening is none other than Michelle Obama. To their surprise, the former first lady accepts an invitation for dinner at their house. But on the evening of the special meal, the rest of the Johnsons want to crash the occasion.
This Is Us – Tuesday, January 4

It’s the final chapter of This Is Us. Season 6 will answer the question of how Toby and Kate’s marriage falls apart after it was revealed on This Is Us Season 5 Episode 16, “The Adirondacks.” Season 6 will also follow the aftermath of Kevin and Madison calling off their wedding and Rebbeca’s ongoing battle with Alzheimer’s. Season 6 of This Is Us premieres Tuesday, January 4 at 9/8c on NBC.

Home Economics – Wednesday, January 5

Home Economics returns for the back half of its first season. Tom and Marina discover some big information about Sofía while Connor and Jojo struggle to keep their relationship a secret. Home Economics returns Wednesday, January 5 at 9:30/8:30c on ABC.
Episode Description: Tom and Marina must make a difficult choice after they uncover a bombshell revelation about Sofía Salazar. Meanwhile, Connor and JoJo’s secret relationship is complicated by Denise and Sarah’s matchmaking efforts.
Star Trek: Prodigy – Thursday, January 6

One of our favorite animated series of 2021, Star Trek: Prodigy, returns with new episodes. Picking up after a narrow escape from a carnivorous planet, relationships and perspectives are changing after Gwyn was abandoned by her father and saved by Dal and the rest of the gang. Star Trek: Prodigy will return Thursday, January 6 on Paramount+.
Women of the Movement – Thursday, January 6

ABC’s limited series, Women of the Movement, tells the story of Mami Till-Mobley, mother of Emmett Till, and her fight for justice after the brutal murder of her son in 1955. The six-episode series will air in three parts over three weeks. Women of the Movement premieres Thursday, January 6 at 8/7c on ABC.
Episode Description: Mamie Till Mobley, a young mother living a simple life in Chicago, begrudgingly lets her adventurous 14-year-old son, Emmett, go on vacation with his great uncle and cousins to Mississippi. Days after his arrival, tragedy strikes and Mamie is faced with a mother’s worst nightmare when her son goes missing.
Nancy Drew – Friday, January 7

Truths are revealed, and confessions are made when Nancy Drew returns with new episodes. Nancy Drew returns Friday, January 7 at 9/8c on The CW.
Episode Description: A truth-inducing ritual takes hold of a town-wide cocktail party, yielding volcanic emotional confessions and a surprising romantic connection for Nancy.
Discovery of Witches – Saturday, January 8

Diana and Matthew return from 16th century London on a mission to find the missing pages of the Book of Life in the third and final season of this supernatural romance. Discovery of Witches Season 3 premieres Saturday, January 8 on AMC+, Sundance Now, and Shudder.
Season Description: In the final series of A Discovery of Witches, Matthew (Matthew Goode) and Diana (Teresa Palmer) return from their trip to 1590 to find tragedy at Sept-Tours. They must find the missing pages from the Book of Life and the Book itself before it’s too late. Their enemies are gearing up against them, and a monster from Matthew’s past who has been lying in wait will return for revenge.
