TV News Wrap-Up: ‘Doctor Who’ Sets Halloween Return, Renewals for ‘Jack Ryan’ and ‘Blindspotting’

‘FBI: International,’ ‘NCIS: Hawai’i’ Get Full Season Orders at CBS
- To the surprise of no one, CBS is completely investing in the newest entries in two of its most successful franchises. TVLine reports, the network has given full-season orders to FBI: International and NCIS: Hawai’i.
- Both series initially received 13 episode orders, but the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic makes it unclear how many episodes will constitute a full season.
- NCIS: Hawai’i follows a team of agents working out of NCIS Pearl Harbor. The procedural stars Vanessa Lachey as Special Agent in Charge Jane Tennant.
- FBI: International expands the universe into a team working throughout Europe on cases involving American citizens abroad.
- NCIS: Hawai’i premiered with 6.6 million total viewers and is averaging 9.3 million with delayed playback. FBI: International’s premiere garnered 6.4 million viewers and is averaging 8.8 million.
- “These two terrific new dramas are off to a tremendous start,” CBS Entertainment chief Kelly Kahl said in a statement. “They have significantly strengthened and improved our lineup on their respective nights and are generating huge increases on our streaming platforms as well. We applaud the talented producers, writers and casts on their compelling storytelling and performances, which are clearly resonating with viewers.”
- NCIS: Hawai’i airs Mondays at 10/9c, while FBI: International airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on CBS.

‘Doctor Who’ Season 13 Gets Halloween Premiere
- Whovians finally know when to prepare for the long awaited Doctor Who Season 13, as Variety reports it will premiere Sunday, Oct. 31 on BBC One, BBC America, and BBC iPlayer.
- Doctor Who: Flux is an eight episode arc following The Doctor and her companions Yaz and Dan as they fight new villains the Flux.
- The news is revealed in a new teaser that features a warning call from The Doctor indicating the Flux are also bringing back past monsters like the Sontarans and Weeping Angels.
- As she’s being called away by her companions she says, “This is the fight of our lives. It’s coming. Be ready.”
- Doctor Who: Flux begins Jodie Whittaker’s final run as The Thirteenth Doctor. She will appear in Season 13, followed by three specials in 2022, before regenerating into the as yet unnamed Fourteenth Doctor.
- Showrunner Chris Chibnall will also exit with Whittaker, being replaced by original executive producer Russell T. Davies.
- Doctor Who: Flux premieres Sunday, Oct. 31 on BBC One, BBC America, and BBC iPlayer.
AMC Orders ‘Tales of The Walking Dead’ Anthology Series
- The mothership may be heading toward the end, but AMC has no intention of winding down The Walking Dead franchise. AMC has ordered spinoff anthology series Tales of The Walking Dead.
- According to TVLine, Season 1 is scheduled to begin production after New Years, for a summer 2022 premiere.
- It will be comprised of six episodes and feature stories following new and established characters from The Walking Dead universe.
- The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead writer/producer Channing Powell is the showrunner, with the franchise’s chief content officer Scott M. Gimple pitching in.
- “This series, more than any other in the [franchise], runs on new voices, perspectives, and ideas — bringing to life stories unlike any we’ve told before,” suggested Gimple. “I’m thrilled to be Channing’s consigliere, helping in every way I can to make those new visions real for the best fans in TV.”
- The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, and The Walking Dead: World Beyond are all available on AMC+.

‘Legends of Tomorrow’ Episode 100 Adds More Original Cast Members
- It looks like Wentworth Miller will be joined by more of his Waverider friends in Legends of Tomorrow’s 100th episode.
- EW.com reports, that original cast members Arthur Darvill (Rip Hunter), Victor Garber (Dr. Martin Stein/Firestorm), Franz Drameh (Jefferson “Jax” Jackson/Firestorm), Falk Hentschel (Carter Hall/Hawkman), and Brandon Routh (Ray Palmer/The ATOM), along with Courtney Ford (Nora Darhk) will all return for the special episode.
- Directed by star Caity Lotz, Legends of Tomorrow Season 7 Episode 3, follows as a flesh and blood Gideon (Amy Louise Pemberton) “gets overwhelmed and has a meltdown…To reboot her, Astra (Olivia Swann) and Spooner (Lisseth Chavez) must dive into her mind and help her remember the Legends. While inside, the team’s newest recruits witness previously unseen moments from the dramedy’s earlier seasons.”
- “We are exploring the memories of who we consider the O-est of the OGs, Gideon, who is the Legend before the Legends,” executive producer and co-showrunner Keto Shimizu tells EW. “As we explore these memories, we get to see familiar faces from all the different iterations of the Legends that she has experienced through her steadfast watch as the ship mother.”
- Legends of Tomorrow airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on The CW, with Episode 100 airing Oct. 27.

Renewals and Cancellations
- Amazon wants more spy adventures, as it has renewed Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan for Season 4, which features the addition of Michael Peña, per Deadline. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
- Though there is no premiere date for Season 3, it features “Jack Ryan (John Krasinski) on the run and in a race against time. Jack is wrongly implicated in a larger conspiracy and suddenly finds himself a fugitive out in the cold. Now, wanted by both the CIA and an international rogue faction that he has uncovered, Jack is forced underground, crisscrossing Europe, trying to stay alive and prevent a massive global conflict.”
- Starz has renewed Blindspotting for Season 2, per Variety. The series is based on the film written by, produced by, and starring Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal. The duo also writes and executive produces Blindspotting, with Casal serving as showrunner.
- “We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love for Season 1, and have been hard at work for the last few months crafting the next chapter of this Bay story,” Casal and Diggs said. “We are so excited to bring the next season to life with the incredible artistry of our cast and crew, and our partners Starz and Lionsgate. They done f—ed around and gave us more runway, so welcome back to the ordeal!”
- Blindspotting is available to stream on Starz.
- Coinciding with its Season 3 premiere on Netflix, the streaming giant has renewed YOU for Season 4, per Variety.
