New Amsterdam Review: Laughter and Hope and a Sock in the Eye (Season 4 Episode 6)

New Amsterdam, Reviews

There is so much joy to discuss on New Amsterdam Season 4 Episode 6, “Laughter and Hope and a Sock in the Eye,” that it’s difficult to decide where to begin.

Max and Helen see actual growth in their relationship, so let’s examine it first.

Helen has more chemistry on one episode with Guillaume when he’s sick and tired after surgery than she ever has with Max. That said, I do understand the relationship more.

The stability that Max provides is new for Helen and it is an attractive quality to have in a partner. He’s not a boring man at all; the only place his wild side really shows itself is in his leadership style.

He’s a rebellious doctor, and when that side shows itself within a romance, it’s probably exciting. Plus, Helen has always wanted to be a mother, and as much as she has to learn, Luna provides her that chance.

It’s easier to see why Max is attracted to Helen, it will just be more fun to watch them grow as a couple if we all stop pretending that London is actually going to happen.

Although, Max pretending like his “Day of Yes” is different than any other day of work is more satisfying to watch when Max has someone like Veronica to rebel against.

Dr. Wilder’s surgery is amazing to watch. Her process is a well-oiled machine, and it is beautiful and informative to watch someone do what they love in a language you may not understand. That’s how the world changes.

But as a disabled writer who has seen the authentic inclusion that New Amsterdam is capable of, it needs to do better with Elizabeth’s story. I want to experience the world from her perspective, and quite frankly there is too much sound on the episode to say that the goal is accomplished.

By contrast, if Shane and Felicity’s parents believe in their love by the end of the episode, the whole world should.

Ending this storyline with a wedding is extreme, but at the same time, sometimes TV shows have a limited amount of time to get a point across, and the world needs to see that people living with mental health disorders can be independent and fall in love.

Plus, Iggy treating patients is Iggy at his best. In the conference room scene where Shane and Felicity’s parents trigger them, Iggy is the only person who sees along with us that they try to comfort each other in an adult manner while their parents act like children.

And speaking of beneficial relationships, Bob and Kit should be performing standup right now.

It’s great to see a show tell us that disabled people can live independently. Then again, New Amsterdam leaves out the fact that there is a lot of red tape sometimes involved in hiring a caretaker for one person, let alone two.

On a surface level, Kit and Bob’s humor eventually helps us see a lighter side of Lauren. I’m thankful that Leyla, Casey, Kit, and Bob are the reason we’ve seen her smile more than ever this season.

  • If you don’t/can’t see or feel the chemistry between Max and Helen then I don’t trust anytime you write about this show.
