Foundation Review: Mysteries and Martyrs (Season 1 Episode 7)
On Foundation Season 1 Episode 7, “Mysteries and Martyrs,” we check back in with Gaal and Hari. I may have done a dance for joy when they appeared. They have one of my favorite storylines since they were our introduction into this world and the foundation, and sadly we don’t see them on every episode.
Their storyline isn’t like the Empire storylines where time away is good for the soul. There’s so much mystery surrounding Gaal and Hari, that you find yourself desperately waiting for the show to shift back to them.
Thankfully on “Mysteries and Martyrs,” we get some more answers from Hari about his murder and how he’s on the ship. Even more interesting than the answers is witnessing this new dynamic between Hari and Gaal.

She’s (rightfully) fed up with his behavior and being kept out of the loop, so she stands up to him and doesn’t let him off the hook for anything. She’s acting more like his equal, not someone that looks up to him or falls under him in rank in anything. It’s fascinating to watch.
Gaal’s grown up a lot since winning the contest, and the show is doing a great job at highlighting her growth. And then, Foundation drops a bombshell on us — Gaal can somehow see or sense the future?!
The flashback montage to previously moments, that we all saw, where she realized something was going to happen before it did is incredibly well done. They are all small moments that we either didn’t notice or had forgotten about (since it has been ages since we have spent time with Gaal).

This new twist adds more excitement and a fantastical element to the series.
It seems as if Hari suspected something is different about her by the way he pushes her to continue and really reflect on the moment. I’m excited to see where this development goes, and hopefully, we don’t have to sit through another Gaal-less episode before we check back in with her and Hari.
And then, we have our ragtag team heading out to the Invictus.
They provide a steady dose of suspense as they make their way on board the ship. This helps keep the momentum of the hour going, especially when things slow down considerably as we focus on Day and Dawn for a bit.

Hugo’s “death” is the most anti-climactic moment. He simply keeps floating off into space.
Part of me hopes that he is secretly jetting off to some communication tower/buoy so he can send a message because that cannot be the last we see of him. One, I love him, and two, again, a little bit silly of a death. However, him being gone opens up the door for Phara and Salvor…
Stray Thoughts
- I’ll admit I’m slightly interested to see how Day does walking the spiral.
- Dawn and Azura… I simply do not care.
- Admittedly, Empire having backup clones is smart and devious.

Here is my guess.
Dawn was made diff by the AI woman. She likely solved the math of Hari’s and agrees with him. Since she is loyal to Empire she cant stop the clone project but introducing variation is nearly the same as stopping it. And if Dawn has a kid? That will change everything.
Assuming Trantor is not blown up.
I assume Day will die during the walk and his clone backup will be used to trick the peeps into following him. In my opinion he should have had that new lady killed before even showing up. She has said empire is wrong and that is not something empire can allow.
The jump event is going to be important. Likely when that big old ship jumps… its going to hurt most of the people onboard. Maybe the warden will be immune?
Does anyone else assume the wArden is Gaal’s kid?
