KATHERYN WINNICK Big Sky Review: Huckleberry (Season 2 Episode 2)

Big Sky Review: Huckleberry (Season 2 Episode 2)

Big Sky, Reviews

A slew of new characters are introduced as the bigger picture begins to widen on Big Sky Season 2 Episode 2, “Huckleberry.”

Every new face is fascinating, and their presence, in their own way, tweaks the frame—a slightly different angle, a wider lens, leads to clues and more insight. Much how I imagine it would be investigating such cases.

It is two cases that get Jenny (Katheryn Winnick) and Cassie (Kylie Bunbury) back together as a team. Jenny’s investigating a car crash for the Sheriff’s Office and Cassie takes a paying gig—a woman whose boyfriend is missing.

Turns out the driver of the truck and the missing boyfriend are one and the same. And what a great way to not only reconnect Dewell and Hoyt, but to weave in Max’s storyline as well.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this somehow links to the Ronald/Wolfgang plot.

That’s right, Rick Legarski’s twin brother, played by the incredible John Carroll Lynch, is named Wolfgang. Or “Wolf, short for Wolfgang. As in Mozart, Van Halen, Blitzer.” In my review of the premiere, Season 2 Episode 1, “Wakey Wakey,” I said Lynch would make him as interesting a character as he did with Rick on Season 1, and he delivers this before the first scene even ends.

Heck, this case might even involve this undercover cop that’s been hanging around Jenny. He’s probably working with the bad cop that killed Big Sam, who is both the driver of the truck and the missing boyfriend. This is one of the great strengths of Big Sky—the twistiness of its plot that’s untwisted by a slow-burn.

The above is really just outlining the premises of the storylines, and that in and of itself is entertaining, but there are so many threads that peel away and things that are random or on the periphery that elevate the material to mountain altitude heights.

This would include Jerrie (Jesse James Keitel) becoming an official PI, this budding romance between Max and Harper, Wolfgang’s farmer partner, T-Lock’s general awfulness, and the everything about Ren and Donno.

There is certainly a lot going on, but it’s all easy to follow, fun enough to never get boring and twisty enough to still shock and surprise. There is no shortage of jaw-dropping moments on Big Sky.

Stray Observations:

  • Wolf’s first mistake was not giving Ronald cereal.
  • Lots of corrupt law enforcement on Big Sky. Huh, interesting.
  • “It’s a whole vibe.”
  • I’m really stoked for the Jamie-Lynn Sigler casting.
  • “This John Wayne Gacy Fall/Winter collection, that ain’t it.”
  • “Love takes many forms, what form it takes depends on you.”
