The Republic of Sarah Review: Pledge Allegiance (Season 1 Episode 11)

Reviews, The Republic Of Sarah

Sarah is up to her neck in personal drama on The Republic of Sarah Season 1 Episode 11, “Pledge Allegiance.”

The fact that Weston knows her father is Capiro326 could take up a whole “A” plot on its own, but Sarah is also obsessed with keeping Corinne’s marriage together.

Adam is the “nice guy” and Danny hurt Corinne. But Sarah is more invested in her best friend’s marriage surviving than Corinne is, no matter that the thought of losing the safety of her family as she knows it is undoubtedly scary to Corinne.

It’s ironic that Adam sees all Coopers as “bad guys” when Sarah has been his biggest defender.

And let’s be very clear, Adam’s insistence that Corinne stops talking to Sarah because Sarah is Danny’s sister is emotional abuse. Even when a couple is 100 percent committed to fixing their marriage, they each need outside support.

Corinne was not trapped in her marriage before — she was just unhappy. But she is if she accepts Adam’s terms.

The Republic of Sarah has given the Adam/Corinne/Danny triangle some depth thanks to history. But I’m definitely not interested in watching Corinne try to fix an abusive relationship we know that she is not going to stay in.

Corinne is wild to accept Adam’s terms. Adultery should never be a prison sentence. It is gut-wrenching to watch Sarah beg Corrine to stay in her life.

Turning one’s back on a best friend to save a marriage is ridiculous, but I have to give The Republic of Sarah this: it’s not a story I’ve ever seen before.

“Pledge Allegiance” is all about, well, allegiances. It’s depressing to watch Corinne make her choice, but lovely to watch Sarah choose her dad over Weston.

I wish The Republic of Sarah would have taken more time to show the difficulty that a head of state would have while dating a journalist.

Weston and Sarah’s relationship basically instantly explodes. The reason why makes sense, but blink and you miss it. He has never been presented as a key player, but Weston’s exit is still jarring.

Nothing is as difficult to watch on “Pledge Allegiance” as Danny’s breakdown after Ellen’s apology, though.

Danny’s emotions are so intense, it’s almost shocking that such a serious scene on the CW handled with subtlety and care.

Danny and Sarah need each other right now. They need to save each other while Corinne desperately tries to piece her marriage back together.

The Republic of Sarah‘s message throughout the episode is that loyalty is a choice. Sarah and Danny have been on the wrong end of many people’s choices for most of their lives.

I just hope that one day they step into the power of actually making their own choices. It’s noble that Sarah chooses her country over her love life, but has she ever actually asked to be Greylock’s leader?

Notes

  • Maya’s storyline about testifying for her mom would have mattered if it were more than just dialogue.
  • Look at Grover and Tito healing and growing and buying a house.
  • The “Romeo & Juliet” play is absolutely ridiculous. We know what’s on Corinne’s mind, we don’t need Billy Shakespeare’s help, here.
