Dynasty Review: But I Don’t Need Therapy (Season 4 Episode 14)

Dynasty, Reviews

Fallon and Sam attempt to help Kirby with her recovery on Dynasty Season 4 Episode 14, “But I Don’t Need Therapy.”

Kirby leads everyone to believe that she’s okay despite the fact that her world has turned upside down with her father’s passing.

She’s just come out of a coma, claiming she is ready to get back into modeling, desperate enough to return to Oliver’s old crew if she can’t get a big gig. It’s obvious she’s masking her pain instead of trying to overcome it, but to what extent is unknown at first. Instead of believing Kirby about her well-being there should have been someone going through her room, confirming nothing was being bought.

Kirby hid her alcohol so easily that a child could’ve found it by chance.

Fallon can’t see that she’s hurting at first because Kirby’s poker face is impeccable, but also because Anders’ death has emotionally ruined Fallon as well.

Fallon can’t admit that she isn’t okay because she’s so focused on making Kirby okay, and Kirby focuses on putting up a front. Admitting vulnerability doesn’t come easy to either of them, so they hurt themselves more instead of being proactive.

Kirby will be someone who has an issue with addiction her entire life, whether it be pills, alcohol, or illicit drugs, and it isn’t something she can help. Her admittance that rehab is a good place for her to be is a significant step in the right direction on her part. Hopefully, her drug days are behind her and she can focus on her well-being in the last half of the season.

Anders would want her to live her life to the fullest and not continue to waste it away. He would like her to come out of rehab better than ever so that she can tackle the world and not let it consume her again.

Anders’ imaginative ghost saying goodbye to Kirby is the most adorable moment and is super important in her overcoming his death. She needs that closure to move on since she missed the funeral, and I think she may have finally gotten it, even if it is from an imaginary ghost.

What still aggravates me is how the show intentionally tries to make fans forget about Steven ever being a thing. There’s a subtle mention about Steven made around halfway through the season and nothing else after that.

Are fans supposed to suddenly forget that Steven is also Anders’ son and is still alive? Why does nobody care about informing him of his fathers death? I don’t care if the showrunners don’t want to ever bring Steven back to the show, but at least be accurate in the storytelling or kill him off once and for all. He should have been the one in the casket so his storyline could be over and done with.

There was no mention of him at Fallon’s wedding, Anders’s funeral, and overall no comment of his wellbeing whatsoever from any of his loved ones. He’s supposed to be locked away in a mental facility, and none of his family members love him enough to give him a second thought. Why after a season and a half have we not gotten closure with his character?

I won’t be shocked if Steven is somehow brought back for Season 5 at some point, but I doubt it’ll happen at the same time. Unless there’s major uproar I assume Steven life the rest of his days forgotten about while wrongly locked away.

Liam’s disappearance from this week’s episode is a travesty, and at this point, is sloppy writing for his character altogether. There’s no rhyme or reason as to why Liam should be at a cabin in the middle of nowhere right after Anders’ death instead of being with his wife.

This back and forth with Liam returning and then promptly disappearing again every other episode is not entertaining or good material for storylines. Fallon is left to grieve the man who helped raise her while he’s out writing. Whether two or three weeks after his funeral or not, Liam should not be gone again already.

Jeff’s new direction into eco-friendly practices to save the earth is an interesting side to him that I’m intrigued to see more of. Jeff has been dipping his toes in many different facets of life, figuring out what will satisfy him enough to spend his time on, but this new adventure may end up helping the world.

Jeff has an outside motive of being the first black billionaire to make it to space for the recognition over the typical two or three white billionaires that are always in the news, and that’s understandable. There should be more recognition given to people who are working hard to better the environment.

However, while he may be looking for credit and a profit from his new vision, his overall goal of helping the planet is admirable. I hope that by the end of the season we see his dreams come to fruition.

Other Thoughts:

  • It pleases me to watch the hospital head go after Adam’s throat and call him out for threatening his coworker. I long for the day that he’s no longer focused on.
  • With the arrival of Amanda (Eliza Bennett) coming, I hope we see the dynamic shift and more focus be spent on her as she makes her way into the family.
  • Sam and Culhane deserve better than what they’re being given at the moment. Their construction storyline is weak and rarely comical or entertaining.
