Big Brother Season 23 Week 5 Recap: How the Mighty Have Fallen

Big Brother, Recaps

It only takes fives weeks, but things are finally heating up in the Big Brother Season 23 house.

Derek X. is showing he is not only a smart competitor, but a strategic one. This type of gameplay could give him the $750,000 prize in the end. His only real competition is Tiffany now that Christian is going home.

This week starts with an HOH competition lasting about 80 minutes, and sadly we must watch a third of it. Why is this not trimmed down for broadcast? Granted, the Wildcard competition is over, but some other type of filler is much more appreciated.

Speaking of parts that could be omitted, Tiffany mentions about ten times how Alyssa cannot win. We get it! She is not in your huge alliance, so obviously you do not want her to become HOH.

However, the HOH competition does provide us with the first deals between houseguests during gameplay on Big Brother Season 23. Derek X. is smart not to believe Alyssa and drop out of the game. Though I doubt she will nominate Derek X. as an initial nominee, he is still a huge target she might put up to backdoor.

Xavier deserves some props though. Not only does he protect himself this week, he tries to get Derek X. to guarantee safety for all the Kings. Luckily, Derek X. knows this is bad for his game and only agrees not to nominate Xavier.

Xavier now has a chance to compete for HOH next week. If he wins, that will solidify another week of safety for The Cookout Alliance. Maybe they will finally realize that Azah and Derek F. bring nothing to their group and get rid of them next week.

Also, how shocking is it that Britini is able to win the POV competition and take herself off the block? Maybe she is finally showing her worth. She will need to win a lot of future competitions if she wants to stick around because she will be the pawn every week until she is evicted.

This pawn trend is getting old in the Big Brother house. Let’s put up two big competitors initially and have them duke it out during the POV. If one of them wins, then put up your pawn so a big threat is definitely seeing Julie on eviction night.

It is also surprising to see Sarah Beth go out so soon in this competition. It makes sense for her to take the $5,000 over the POV because she knows someone else will steal it from her who lasts longer. However, it isn’t cool that she whines to Derek X. when he wants to steal it from her.

Alyssa does have a right to be upset with Sarah Beth for taking the cash because SB is still assuming Alyssa or Kyland are going to use the Veto on her if they win. That isn’t how this game works, and if you think it does you are not going to be here very much longer, SB.

And finally a new type of punishment for this POV game. It’s hilarious watching Derek X. having to unlock the door for anyone needing to use the bathroom. With 12 people in the house, that is a lot of bathroom usage.

Not as exciting to see is the overplayed unitard punishment. This fad in the Big Brother house is something CBS can do away with going forward. How about bigger punishments like not being able to play in the next HOH or vote in the next eviction?

The new High Roller’s room is a great new twist, especially because it involves America’s vote. I am predicting Derek X., Tiffany, and Kyland will get the most votes from fans. Don’t be surprised to see Britini crying when she finds out she is not liked by America.

I bet Christian is definitely kicking himself now. For some reason, he thinks it is a good idea to evict Whitney in Big Brother Season 23 Week 4. This is the dumbest game move to date. Whitney has zero alliances and is weak in competitions.

Whitney is probably laughing from her home watching the events unfold. She is spot on with her assumption Derek X. wants to get Christian out. Maybe Whitney and Christian can discuss it after he returns home from his short stay in the Big Brother house.

  • Great article! I agree with most of this. However, I don’t think it was reasonable for Alyssa to be mad at SB for taking the money. Clearly SB would lose the veto if she took it, so why expect her to basically opt into a punishment or different unknown prize by taking it? That would not have been any more helpful for anyone trying to protect her than her taking the veto and automatically losing it.
