This month, if you’re in the mood for a murder mystery, you can check out Hulu’s Only Murders in The Building, or you could go the thriller route and watch Adrian Grenier in Clickbait. On a lighter note, there’s Netflix’s twist on a teen classic with He’s All That and the return of The Other Two.

Here are our picks for what to stream in August:

Mr. Corman (Apple TV+) – August 6

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as Josh Corman, a fifth-grade teacher who is struggling with loneliness, anxiety, and other problems. Mr. Corman premieres on August 6 on Apple TV+

Series Description: Written, directed, produced by and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mr. Corman follows the days and nights of Josh Corman, an artist at heart but not by trade. Things haven’t been going his way lately — his lifelong dream of a career in music didn’t pan out and he finds himself teaching fifth grade at a school in the San Fernando Valley, his ex-fiancé Megan has moved out and his high school buddy has moved in. Aware that he still has a lot to be thankful for, Josh struggles nevertheless through universal feelings of anxiety, loneliness and self-doubt. Darkly funny, oddly beautiful and deeply heartfelt, this relatable comedy-drama speaks for our contemporary generation of 30-somethings — rich with good intentions, poor with student loans and working to become grown-ups sometime before they’re senior citizens.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2 (Paramount+) – August 12

It’s time to board the U.S.S. Cerritos once again. Star Trek: Lower Decks premieres on August 12 on Paramount+.

Series Description: Developed by Emmy Award winner Mike McMahan (“Rick and Morty,” “Solar Opposites”), Star Trek: Lower Decks, a new half-hour animated comedy series, focuses on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least important ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos, in 2380. Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford and Tendi have to keep up with their duties and their social lives, often while the ship is being rocked by a multitude of sci-fi anomalies.

Titans Season 3 (HBO Max) – August 12

The Titans are headed to Gotham City where they’ll meet Tim Drake, Barbara Gordon, Jonathan Crane, and more new and familiar faces. Titans Season 3 premieres on HBO Max on August 12 with three episodes and subsequent episodes will premiere every Thursday through October 21.

Season Description: In season three, circumstances draw our heroes to Gotham City, where they will reunite with old friends and face new threats.

Beckett (Netflix) – August 13

An American tourist finds himself the target of a manhunt while vacationing in Greece. Beckett debuts on Netflix on August 13.

Film Description: While vacationing in Greece, American tourist Beckett (John David Washington) becomes the target of a manhunt after a devastating accident. Forced to run for his life and desperate to get across the country to the American embassy to clear his name, tensions escalate as the authorities close in, political unrest mounts, and Beckett falls even deeper into a dangerous web of conspiracy.

CODA (Apple TV+) – August 13

CODA follows Ruby as she struggles with pursuing her dreams and obligations to her family. CODA premieres on Apple TV+ on August 13.

Film Description: Seventeen-year-old Ruby (Emilia Jones) is the sole hearing member of a deaf family — a CODA, child of deaf adults. Her life revolves around acting as interpreter for her parents (Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur) and working on the family’s struggling fishing boat every day before school with her father and older brother (Daniel Durant). But when Ruby joins her high school’s choir club, she discovers a gift for singing and soon finds herself drawn to her duet partner Miles (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo). Modern Love returns for a second season with new stories you’ll fall in love with. Modern Love Season 2 premieres on August 13 on Amazon Prime Video.

Diary of a Future President Season 2 (Disney+) – August 18

It’s time to check back in with Elena as she enters the seventh grade. Diary of a Future President Season 2 premieres with all ten episodes on August 18 on Disney+.

Season Description: Season two of Diary of a Future President continues the origin story of Cuban American and future leader Elena Cañero-Reed as she enters the seventh grade. Told using the narration of excerpts from Elena’s diary, this coming-of-age series and family comedy follows Elena through the ups and downs of middle school which set her on the path to becoming the president of the United States.

Nine Perfect Strangers (Hulu) – August 18

A ten-day wellness treat promises its attendees that they’ll walk away reinvigorated, but the truth is, they have no idea what’s in store for them. The first three episodes of Nine Perfect Strangers drop on Hulu on August 18 with new episodes airing weekly.

Series Description: Based on The New York Times bestselling book by author Liane Moriarty, Nine Perfect Strangers takes place at a boutique health-and-wellness resort that promises healing and transformation as nine stressed city dwellers try to get on a path to a better way of living. Watching over them during this 10-day retreat is the resort’s director, Masha, a woman on a mission to reinvigorate their tired minds and bodies. However, these nine “perfect” strangers have no idea what is about to hit them. 

The Chair (Netflix) – August 20

Sandra Oh stars as Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim, the first woman to chair the English department at a prestigious university. The Chair premieres on Netflix on August 20.

Series Description: The Chair follows Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim as she navigates her new role as the Chair of the English department at prestigious Pembroke University. Ji-Yoon is faced with a unique set of challenges as the first woman to chair the department, and as one of the few staff members of color at the university.

Clickbait (Netflix) – August 25

Clickbait is a thriller with a social media angle as Nick Brewer’s family has to save him after a video appears online threatening his death at 5 million views. Clickbait premieres on August 25 on Netflix.

A video appears on the internet of the badly beaten Nick holding a card that says “I abuse women. At 5 million views, I die.” Is this a threat or confession? Or both? Originally a Comedy Central original, The Other Two has moved over to HBO Max. The Other Two Season 2 premieres on August 26 on HBO Max with the first two episodes.

Season Description: With their pop star brother, ChaseDreams, officially entering retirement at the ripe old age of fourteen, Brooke and Cary must now contend with a new famous family member: their 53-year-old mother Pat, and her eponymous daytime talk show. Humiliated at being The Other Two yet again, they double down and make it their mission not to be.

He’s All That (Netflix) – August 27

Netflix is swapping around this teen classic; an influencer takes on the challenge of turning the school loser into prom king. He’s All That debuts on Netflix on August 27.

Film Description: He’s All That reimagines the original plot of the 1999 teen classic She’s All That. The contemporary story follows an influencer (Addison Rae) who accepts a challenge to turn the school’s biggest loser (Tanner Buchanan) into prom king.

Only Murders in the Building (Hulu) – August 31

Comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short, along with Selena Gomez, star in this murder-mystery series. Only Murders in the Building premieres on August 31 on Hulu.

Series Description: From the minds of Steve Martin, Dan Fogelman and John Hoffman comes a comedic murder-mystery series for the ages. Only Murders In The Building follows three strangers (Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez) who share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one. When a grisly death occurs inside their exclusive Upper West Side apartment building, the trio suspects murder and employs their precise knowledge of true crime to investigate the truth. As they record a podcast of their own to document the case, the three unravel the complex secrets of the building which stretch back years.
